Splash/ Blue Silkie Thread

Pics
They are SUPER adorable :love

They look blue to me, but one of my hens started out very dark like your cutie in the front and turned into a very nicely marked splash (in my opinion, anyway). I'll post some pics of her when my hubby gets of the computer, whenever that may be. Its a pain to post them from my phone, which is what I'm using now :barnie

I would love it if one of these turns out to be a splash! This gives me hope. Do you have a pic of yours when it was a little chick and when it was grown up?

These were the only pics I could find of her as a chick

They're not great, but I'm not sure what happened to her actual fuzzy chick pics.

She's the fluffy butt in the back. She still looks very blue here.

Again, in the back.

Quite a bit older, but it took me some time to realize she was splash and not blue.

This is what she looks like now

The coloring is beautiful! You say, she. How long till you found out her sex? Do splash usually start out kind of white?

Thank you :)

My splash start out white with a very light blue cast, most of them anyway. Occasionally I get a few that look very, very light blue with creamy spots.

I think she was around 5 months old or so when I finally figured out she was a girl. And it was only obvious because I had a couple of cockerels the same age to compare my pullets to. Typically, the fluffier they are, the harder it is to tell their gender :/

What size are silkies when they are full grown? Are they standard size or banty size? I'd like a silkie but don't want banty size birds. What is the going price for a blue splash silkie rooster? They are for sale for $5 in a nearby town. They also have white silkies, once I see them in person, I might want a white one.

Do other chickens pick on them in the runs? I wouldn't want to put him out there if they were to pull his feathers out. If I get a female, do their feathers get nasty from laying eggs? I just wondered because of the way their feathers are made. Thanks, Sylvia

Here in the US, they're bantam size (though I have heard there are some breeders working on standard Silkies, but have never seen many, I've seen 1 LF Silkie, and it was an odd looking thing).
The price very much depends on their age, quality or how badly the breeder needs to be rid of extra cockerels/roosters. I don't let mine go for less than $10 each, unless I'm loaded down with them or I'll occasionally throw one in for free if I'm letting pullets go (which is VERY rare, usually if I raise them long enough to sex them all girls stay unless they've got serious faults, and even then some stay if they prove to be good brooders or layers, I just don't hatch their eggs).
And, whether they'll be picked on or not really depends on your flock. Lots of people here run their Silkies with LF, but I don't because someone always seems to get singled out.

Good luck.

Well, I might have to get one and keep it in the house as a pet. LOL They are so cute. What is an LF? So many abbreviations. Sylvia
