Can someone explain split wings to me? I was looking at a couple started silkies I have and I think they may have. I hear it is an undesirable trait, but is it a disqualification in the show ring?

I also wanted to mention that unless the wings are hideous, it is best to let a silkie mature to at least 6 months of age before you make a final cut based on wings. Sometimes 'shreddyness' and just the way the feathers are growing in can give the appearance of them being off but until the bird is fully feathered you can't be sure.

That is good information to know. I have always wondered about the shreddyness some of mine have had. I really appreciate your input Niki.

What about when the wings don't seem to tuck in very well. Like the bird wants to carry them away from the body. Is that a trait passed down too or just something due to a particular bird. I have seen it in roosters more than hens.
