I always thought that a blood spot in an egg yolk meant that the egg was fertilized. But recently I have had a few eggs with spots even though I don't have a rooster. Anyone know why?

A blood spot happens when the hen is forming the egg inside her. It does not mean it is fertile. Fertile eggs have a bullseye.

Blood spots are caused by a glitch in the process as the egg works it's way along the reproductive assembly line. They are not that uncommon and in commercial production are generally slated for bakery useage. We've been eating them all along. Just a little extra protein.
