spraddle leg and he's the peanut-PIC

I've learned my lesson - leave them in the bator for a good amount of time after they hatch. Even longer than I was told to.

Is this the reason that he got the spraddle in the first place????

I took my lil guy out, b/c he had egg shell stuck to his back. i got that off, but his feathers weren't fluffed and haven't fluffed fully yet... I figure that i would help, one step at a time, but I see his feathers are starting to fluff, he picking back there too... so maybe he'll just take care of it? ... I'm afraid of giving him a bath, being so tiny.

He is sosososo sweet looking..so tiny.. I hope he is on the mend and able to walk again. I have only ever treated a goose for spraddled legs...Poor thing was on a farm for two weeks before they asked for my help. Liitle goose was not able to walk at all and i was amazed she had lived so long already.
I kept the tape on for four days then took it of so she could have a swim. Shw was able to walk but still a little unsteady. I left the tape on for another two days- after which she was walking normally...Two days later she went home - and ran back to momma goose in the paddock.

Good luck with your little guy...

Yes, I originally thought it was because I had the humidity too high (I might have, who knows) but this little quial I know I took out too soon. There were five others in there for quite a few hours before him, and I took them all out togehter. When I noticed he wasn't fully dry, I put him back in the bator. After he dried and was in the brooder, I noticed the spraddle leg.

awww. jeez... I'm so new to all of this hatching.... and i thought I READ everything.

well
the good news is that he/she is walking and running around with the rest of them...I put paper towels in the whole thing, they're still pretty small and it's a lot easier to clean at this point...i'll have to get another pic so you can see him/her now...
I was watching them yesterday and Elpy stood up on the stuffed bunnies head and was the same size as the others.... so cute... but every time i getthe camera out, he shy!

one more thing...

PASTY BUTT
Is this from taking them out to early also?

We had a bout of it the other day, 3 out of 5 of them... What cause this? There doesn't seem to be a problem anymore, but I keep checking...

thanks

This past winter, well it's not quite over yet but anyway, I had alot of spraddle leg. It did'nt occur to me that nwspaper is slick. Now I know what caused it most likely. I have one chick that hatched today that has a very slight curled toe. The outer toe is under the one next to it. I put a boot on to correct it. This winter I was booting alot of chicks. Glad I know about the newspaper now. I'll stick to paper towel for now on.

hmmm. I bought game bird feed, they didn't have starter crumble, just the mash, and that's so messy and a waste of money, IMO. I grounded up some to get them going, now they eat fine. The only thing is that it's not medicated.

Just want to say THANK YOU to everyone on this thread!! I just had my first chick with spraddle leg, and naturally, it was a bantam! A cute little d'uccle. I knew about the bandaid thing, but it was so huge he still couldn't stand up. Then I found this thread, and read where it said to cut it in half...duh...why didn't I think of that?!?

Well, anyway, his little brace is on, and he's figuring out how to get around the brooder with the others just fine...I put a little food on the brooder floor for him, but he INSISTS on eating out of the big feeder like everyone else! LOL Oh, and I left him in the hatcher for a FULL 24 hours, and he came out spraddled (wire mesh bottom) so...
