Spring 2017 first timers post!

I took the heat lamp out of our coops yesterday. My chickies are big birds now! (Well, except the 3 still in the brooder in the bathroom. Lol )

How old are they?

Mine are only 2.5weeks old, they are getting bigger, still 1/2 fuzz though. I am thinking another week or 10 days at this rate. They are being brooded in the coop, using a heat plate we have had temps drop into the low 30's and they are just fine. So glad I found BYC and learned about in coop brooding, I cannot imagine having them and the mess inside the house! The thing is my chickens are chicken, I open the brooder up and they will not venture out. I may just move them to the coop floor and be done with the brooder soon.

Mine are about 5 weeks, and I just shut off the lamp this morning! I had used a dimmer switch on it, and gradually taking it down, and figured since they are in the house anyway they should be ok now to go without it. I'll probably switch off the heat in the house in a week, then totally open the window of the room they are in so they can get used to cooler mornings, and move them outside into their coop about 2 weeks.

i have 7 chicks just start out we run big sheep ranch so will be lamb around 7 may so I got buye my coop but I found one I really thank work we live southdakota so got make sure its going be good for winter months

Welcome all new members! My question is this: all you folks with 15, 20, 30 chickens what the heck are you going to do with all those eggs?

. I have 10 chicks but two definite cockerels and maybe at least one more so I'll probably have about 6 or 7 layers. That's a lot of eggs! Just curious. I know chicken math is a real thing. There are so many cool breeds and they are so beautiful and fun to watch but that's a whole lotta eggs

. And also how big are your coops for this many chickens? I'm limited by my coop size. My coop is about 36 square feet. So can't put too many in there. I guess I'm asking because I know I will want more next year but just not sure how to manage it with all those extra eggs and room in the coop.

Give away those eggs, sell them to offset the feed cost. Or bake a lot and sell or give them away. The coop is 120++ sq ft., and the run? Over 300 sq ft. Oooops the quest was for new comers only. Sorry

We have 9 getting 6 more next Friday we have a small farmers market down the road we are planning to sell or trade eggs in exchange for money or fresh produce we also thought we could make a deal to get the produce that's no longer sellable but not rotten to feed our chickens which in turn gives us better eggs

How are your peeps doing these days?


Getting 36 - straight run. So eating most of the cockerels. Excess eggs I'm hoping to sell. Around here that can be quite difficult due to regulations, but I'm hoping to find enough people to buy.
And I live on a farm with two existing chicken coops (one fixed up and currently boarding 4 leghorns, the other needs repair as well), so space isn't a problem.
