Spring 2017 first timers post!

Im in the process now of building my coop.  I had to google how to use a drill and a saw .  Funny post but Im in the same boat.  Frame a little, back to google or youtube,  do a little more, oops back to youtube or google.  LOL!

Wow! I did exactly the same at nights before I jumped into it on weekends. My favorite part was framing the roof rafters and making doors (I got 5 doors on my coop & runs) I've never used saw & nailer before and toward the end cordless drill and screws are my best friend, and the coop survived a mini twisters over a year ago.

I successfully convinced my husband that we needed chickens. I think my oldest daughter (3 years old) is more excited than I am! lol

We have collected a boat load of pallets and will start construction on a coop soon-ish. I'm thrilled to have found BYC, this place is awesome! I'm looking forward to the journey!

Order is IN, deposit made!

There was a consequence to hesitating so long though, won't be able to pickup until April 28/29

(a week later then hoped for). But that's ok! More time to get the brooder together and fix up the coop!



@comeongetdown My little one will be close to 2 when we get them. He loves the chickens (we have a couple we're babysitting), and I really hope he likes the chicks!

What brooder do you use? I used the Rubbermaid and those plastic containers before and so does 100 gal horse trough. No more! I'd been using this big furniture sturdy boxes, it's amazing, I can expand it when needed by adding another big box

for their " "playroom"/feeding room to spread their wings and their running abilities by just cutting doorways in between and tape them securely. Copied the idea from Chicken Chick (Kathy Shea Mormino), whenever I need some practical feminine ideas

Yay!! The chicks are here!!!
All safe and sound!! THANK YOU MY PET CHICKEN!!!
Thank goodness they use Priority Express!! I can't say enough about what a relief it is!! Ohio to Texas in less than 24hrs!!
They packed them really well, heating element of some sort!! And nesting material, that was so soft!! I looked last night to see what the temps were in ohio(drop shipped from Meyers) it was 20*f!! I was on pins and needles!!
I really am glad I spent the xtra for MPC. They only offer the Priority express shipping method this time of year!!
Of course I also have to say the post office was great!! Even though the tracking still shows the chicks are in Ohio. Hmmm.....
Does that mean I get another set????
My husband was so funny, he went with me to get them, and took one look at the box, and said " there's another box right?"
I said "no, they have to fit all 15 in here to help with warmth". Then he said, "no, there's no way they could put all 15 in that little thing"!
Ok, enough of my rambling, here they are...

I am just relieved I didn't have one of those horror experiences that some unfortunate people have with other hatcheries. I have heard a few nightmares that these poor people wait, and wait, just to find out some hatcheries sent the box out on a Saturday!!

I ordered

I already have silkies, BCM, Polish, and one Ayam Cermani rooster.
I am going for a nice colorful flock, and eggs.
I could go on and on about the breeds I wanted, however I was limited on what was available that week to ship.

Funny thing is my husband, got involved in the ordering process, and asked for BO, and SLW. I was going to order 2 of each to make him happy, however he got ahold of the computer and click, click, away he went.

I saw in your earlier post that you said your favorite part of the building process was the roof rafters. I am not sure if you were being sarcastic, or serious. However, if you were serious, could you give me the videos that teach you about the whole rafter cuts, and the birds eye cut.
I absolutely just suck at math, and it's one of those things I still can't understand.
I have gone to those website that you enter in your desired pitch, and the size of the shed/building and it spits out what length the boards should be cut. And at what angle am I supposed to cut the rafters if I am going to have a 2x4 across the top?
I am still clueless on this whole birds eye cut.
To me it just looks like a v upside down.
Mabye there is a a printable outline I could find online for that Birdseye cut!! And I could just trace it!!!
