Spring 2017 first timers post!

Spartan22,

I saw in your earlier post that you said your favorite part of the building process was the roof rafters. I am not sure if you were being sarcastic, or serious. However, if you were serious, could you give me the videos that teach you about the whole rafter cuts, and the birds eye cut.
I absolutely just suck at math, and it's one of those things I still can't understand.
I have gone to those website that you enter in your desired pitch, and the size of the shed/building and it spits out what length the boards should be cut. And at what angle am I supposed to cut the rafters if I am going to have a 2x4 across the top?
I am still clueless on this whole birds eye cut.T
I had to giggle a little bit, you are referring to a Bird's MOUTH cut, not a Bird's Eye cut! I just finished building a carport onto my shop and had to install a number of rafters, something I had never done before. YouTube was a great tool to teach me how to use a square to determine the cut. If I can do it, you surely can as well. Good luck. BB

To me it just looks like a v upside down.
Mabye there is a a printable outline I could find online for that Birdseye cut!! And I could just trace it!!!

Thanks

Quote: I find a couple sets of good sturdy clamps, and some ratchet straps to be absolutely indispensable when doing little building projects. Thankfully, hubby is a building/truss/roofing designer, so he is my brain with such details. But, if you can get your front and back wall erected, you can then clamp your first rafter to the side of the building, and scribe your bird's mouths with a pencil. Use that first rafter after you cut it (as a template) to then cut all of the rest of your rafters. Each bird's mouth should be a 90* cut into the rafter.

Yay!! The chicks are here!!!
All safe and sound!! THANK YOU MY PET CHICKEN!!!
Thank goodness they use Priority Express!! I can't say enough about what a relief it is!! Ohio to Texas in less than 24hrs!!
They packed them really well, heating element of some sort!! And nesting material, that was so soft!! I looked last night to see what the temps were in ohio(drop shipped from Meyers) it was 20*f!! I was on pins and needles!!
I really am glad I spent the xtra for MPC. They only offer the Priority express shipping method this time of year!!
Of course I also have to say the post office was great!! Even though the tracking still shows the chicks are in Ohio. Hmmm.....
Does that mean I get another set????
My husband was so funny, he went with me to get them, and took one look at the box, and said " there's another box right?"
I said "no, they have to fit all 15 in here to help with warmth". Then he said, "no, there's no way they could put all 15 in that little thing"!
Ok, enough of my rambling, here they are...

I am just relieved I didn't have one of those horror experiences that some unfortunate people have with other hatcheries. I have heard a few nightmares that these poor people wait, and wait, just to find out some hatcheries sent the box out on a Saturday!!
Congratz on the new babies.

@Nksg75 Awesome! So glad everything went well! I ordered several similar breeds, so excited to see how cure they are

Ha! Your right! Birds Mouth. You know that bird cut thingie!!
To me this part seems overwhelming!
I know how to build the base, frame the walls, and even know how to shingle a roof, but ask me to build a roof, and I am at a loss!!
Thank you for the link, I will check it out!

Thanks, yes, all female!! I was hatching too many males, and don't have the heart to eat them, once I name them!!
I also needed them to be vaccinated for Mereks. (We have had a case of that before). It cost so much to get the vaccine, then buy the eggs, only to hatch a few females, or any at all! I decided to just take a chance and try a hatchery.
I had dealt with MPC before for a coop, and they were awesome in the Cust service dept. so I decided to try them for chicks, even though we have a hatchery about 200 miles away.
Ideal hatchery did not have the variety that MPC has.
I have SLW, BO, SS, OE, EE, Astrlorpe(sp?), and the most pricey chick... Lavender Orpington.
