This is my first time getting chickens too! I'm sooo excited but probably very unprepared! I need some tips and help on a lot of things. The breeds I've chosen from MPC are 2 Blue Cochins, 1 Easter Egger, 1 Easter Egger Bantam, and 1 Buff Orpington! I'm new to chickens as I've said, but I've raised quail last summer. I NEED HELP WITH EVERYTHING SO PLEASE HELP ME BEFORE THEY COME!!

This forum is a fantastic resource!! Most folks will be happy to help you. Maybe you could let us know what you have prepared for your new chicks and we can help fill in the blanks?

Speaking of unprepared, a big city guy walked in a store to pick up a bag of dog food end up walking out of store with 10 peeps in a box without telling his wife beforehand. Don't know anything about chickens end up having 30 now and obsessed with taking care of them. LOL

My wife, Carol, and I have for years wanted to raise our own chickens and have our own fresh eggs. Our dream is finally coming true and we accept the challenge of having the first egg. We haven't ordered chic's yet or even put the first nail in the building. We are actually in no hurry since the fact is we just arrived in AZ last November 12th. God is good and we trust that He will provide.

Welcome to all, first timers and veterans alike! I had a feeling we'd see more on this thread after it was posted on the BYC FB page!

For instance, I bought a pre-fab coop, that I am very happy with, but the "holds 15 adult birds" really means it holds 12 adult birds. Even though my freebie dog chain linked fencing is a 12' x 30' run (coop inside), your coop STILL needs to be large enough so that they are not crowded inside of it. In the winter, I see my birds spending most of their time IN THE COOP, and it's messier to clean when it's cold.
Amen to the pre-fab coop. I also bought one which said it was fine for up to four birds. My one BO and one welsummer take up the whole roost. I love the coop, but it's nowhere near big enough for four hens.
