Spring 2017 first timers post!

I'm driving up to Meyer Hatchery to pick up my first chicks in two weeks!

I got 6 Easter Eggers and 2 Welsummers (all ladies!).

My coop is being delivered tomorrow so I've got a ton of time to paint and embellish it, so I'm looking for ideas.

(I'm in central Ohio BTW)

The lady there at Meyers told me that by March/April the lines of car

can be as many as 200 a day, I got mine couple of days ago, pouring rain but there's good traffic of people picking up theirs order.

I'm out here in NE Ohio so of course I'm planning on starting with Buckeyes! And I'm only about an hour or two from Meyer Hatchery that's probably where I'm going to end up getting them from. Any other newbies out in my neck of the woods?

Almost a newbie but NOT, am from NE Ohio, maybe buckeyes will be on my next list.

We aren't novice, novice since we did start out with 10 chicks last spring, but we are still very much learning & wanting to learn! We ended up giving up 5 of the chicks to a good friend of mine after they were pullets because they were Buff Sex-Links. We don't have a ton of space & my daughter was going to be showing the chickens as a 4-H project so we decided to give them away to make room for more "flashier" show quality chickens! LOL! We ended up with 3 Wellsummers & 2 Silver-Laced Wyandottes. This year we plan on ordering from a hatchery so we have more of a selection. We also expanded so we can now fit about 15 hens! So excited for Spring!

We're ordering from Murray McMurray Hatchery &, boy, do those chicks go fast! Especially the sexed females! That's why we've been on the fence about whether to order now or wait until it gets a bit warmer

The local hatchery I'm using doesn't do pickup until late April...so I must wait.

But it's less stress on the chicks, it's pretty cold up this way.

I'm in west Virginia starting my first small flock of 5 or 6. Haven't decided on breed due to my kids want to hand pick. Any suggestions on places near martinsburg wv that would have a selection. Just eggs not for meat.

For eggs, may I suggest Plymouth Barred Rocks, Rhode Island Reds, Leghorns, Black Australorps, & for colored eggs (blue/green) Easter Eggers & I love the dark brown eggs of Welsummer, darker yet - French Black Copper Marans (tho they're not as egg prolific as the above mentioned). Now most sex links (I.e. Cinnamon queen, gold & black stars etc.) are great egg factories but has disadvantages. Buff Orpingtons and Speckled Sussex are great additions for kids.
