Spring 2017 first timers post!

Lol, I guess I got it all wrong, worrying about getting the coop done before the chicks come!

Yep Gary, you got it all wrong!! LOL! I had my original chicks

for 3 wks before I officially started building, since I had to research, learn, gather materials from different suppliers the cheapest possible. It took me couple of months before I can move em while am
Working on the runs and finish outside trimming.

Yeah, I almost fell out of my seat when that chicken did that. It was funny.
It made me think of those utube videos of the roosters who attack.
Only it was my sweet natured silkie!

That is terrible! What strain is it?
Is it the newest strain that's been all over the media? HPAI H5?

I think the whole boredom buster topic is easily found on BYC. I like to give the girls a flock block, and the hanging veggie. That works well for us.
Also just going into the coop and hanging around them is what they seem to enjoy almost as much as food!!

So I am trying to figure out my first coop for the birds, which I don't have yet. I am planning on getting 6 chicks, I am building a coop out of wood pallets. Each pallet measures 72" long x 48"wide. I want to make the coop larger incase we decide to get more chickens. What size coop should I go with and how many pallets do you think I need. (I am terrible at math and not afraid to admit it)

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Ok, I'll take a stab at it.
Please be advised, I am also terrible at math, I just have a weird obsession about pallets and building coops!!
Ok
72"=6'
48"=4'

If you double both you could do a 8x12
That would give you 96 square feet
Minimum coop requirements is listed at 4square foot per bird, however I am under the notion that bigger is better when it comes to chickens and there space.
I know I would get mighty pissy if I have to share a small space with many others.
So to start off with you would need 4 of those pallets as your base.
Then you need to decide how tall you want your walls?
What kind of roof etc..

Have you looked at the hoop coop designs at all? It is a relatively inexpensive way too make a coop that is easily expanded if your flock out grows it. Just pop the back side off and add panels as desired. They have a whole section on them on this site.

H5n8 but im so far away from where it was found its ridiculous. People i know who have chickens nit far from me still let theirs out and all i can hear is mine complaining lol

I am new here and getting my first chicks in April. Neighbor has RIR she was kind enough to "free range" all over the neighborhood last summer and one hatched an egg. She thinks my porch is hers! She commandeered the pet carrier on the porch as her nest box. Unfortunately, I have gotten attached to her and since I have a storage shed, I thought that was the best start on a coop without alot of additional expense.
I started out wanting 1 but since they are social, I said 2. Then I thought since I was new, I might lose one so I decided on 3. But... now I am wanting 4 and I think that will be where I stay.... at least this year.
I am looking at getting a Jersey Giant, Speckled Sussex, Gold Lace Wyandotte & an Austrolorp. Need advice on if those 4 will "play" nice together.

Love this forum... I am learning chicken math quite fast... and I was never good at human math ever! lol

If you order from Meyer you can get a free "meal maker" and then you would have 5... I think they should all get along being raised from chicks but not sure, someone with more experience can chime in...
