"Springing in the Chicks" 2016 April Hatch-a-Long Hosted by Mike & Sally

Any wild bird experts? My cat thought this was dinner; she was mad at me when I told her no. Not sure if I'll be able to find it's nest in the morning but not sure momma would take it back since it is hurt. Got a teeny toothmark, I used antiseptic and wrapped it in a bandaid as there's no way to stitch something that small.

I wouldn't say I'm an expert, but I've saved and raised quite a few. First, I would take the bandaid off and just let it go ahead and close up. They need to eat every several hours, so depending on how long you've had it, it's probably going to be pretty hungry. It looks ready to eat in the pic. If you have any kind of canned meat or canned cat food, you can add some water to it and suck it up in a dropper/syringe to feed to it. If you don't know how to hand feed a bird, google it, it is pretty easy! Put it back in the nest if you can find it! Make sure you keep it in a warm draft free area. Luckily, that one looks fairly feathered out. If you can find the nest, put it back in and then keep an eye on it from afar. Usually momma bird will take it back (despite what everyone says about birds rejecting their young because of human scent). Good luck!! Feel free to pm me if you have any questions.

I have hand raised many lovebirds. Would the chick feed for parrots possibly work? It's a mash you serve warm in a syringe.

I do not understand what is meant by a malpostion under the air cell is both and internal and external pip.
my take on it is that usually a chick internally pips, rests, externally pips, rests, then zips. A malpositioned pip doesn't have the rest time between the internal and external so it can take a little longer. But I could be wrong.

If they have that, yes, that would be perfect! The bird will just probably need to eat tonight, and I figured it was more likely someone would have potted meat or a can of cat food.... @generaldsherman
Extremely good point but I would avoid the potted meat due to the salt. Baby food, like rice would be ok for a meal or two. I have used it for my babies when I was out of their regular food. Cat food was a great idea in my opinion.

Yes! Cat food works great! I've never thought about the salt in potted meat! That is a good point. I've only used it in emergencies, and haven't had problems, but def. not a long term solution.

thanks all. It has a full tummy for tonight (got a cat, she's the one the found the fledgling) and there's a bird rescue in Phoenix I can take it to tomorrow since I'm headed that way for an orthodontist appointment, if I don't find the nest in the morning.
