"Springing in the Chicks" 2016 April Hatch-a-Long Hosted by Mike & Sally

I thought I'd stop by and give an update on my hatch (or lack thereof). My first group of eggs (shipped) locked down Sunday evening and should've hatched by now. At candle today none of them were moving. They'll get until tomorrow, but it looks like 0% for those.
The second group due to hatch on 5/2 will lock down tomorrow. Those were candled on Monday for day 14 and the one was still a quitter, but the other four looked like they should on day 14 and the air cells looked great!
The third group due to hatch on 5/9 was candled on Monday as well for day 7. All 6 of those looked like they were developing great and the air cells looked good too!

The fourth group was set last night under a possible broody (1st time for her). 5 eggs the same flavor.

Everyone has had such beautiful babies hatch!

Have a great day!

Sorry to hear about the bad luck with the shipped eggs. Are you gonna contact the seller or just chalk it up as a loss?

I sell eggs for hatching but I do test hatches to get an idea of how fertile the eggs are, my hatches have been around 90% and most people I sell eggs to get around 70% with the eggs I ship. Don't know how the others pack their eggs but I want people who buy my eggs to get the best possible hatch. I have had some poor hatches with eggs that have been shipped to me and some decent hatches too. I always include a hatching egg disclaimer with my eggs.

There are no guarantees on hatching eggs. Please buy only if you are willing to risk that they may not hatch.
THIS IS DUE TO THE MANY FACTORS. THESE FACTORS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
-EXTREME TEMPERATURE CHANGES.
-ROUGH HANDLING OF THE PACKAGE DURING SHIPPING.
-X-RAYING THE PACKAGE BY THE POSTAL SERVICE.
-THE DISTANCE THE EGGS HAVE TO TRAVEL.
-THE INCUBATION PROCESS.
Although hatching eggs are assumed fertile, be aware that NO hatching eggs are guaranteed to hatch. There is a reasonable expectation for your eggs to arrive intact; not broken or cracked, and that they are actually fertile or at least EXTREMELY likely to be fertile. There is no way for breeders to test each egg for fertility prior to shipping, most fertile egg sellers take time to incubate & hatch from their own supply regularly to verify fertility. It is safe to assume that if their eggs are hatching, that all or most of the eggs will be fertile. When the eggs are gathered and mailed to you, the eggs may have contaminants on them. You should wash your hands before and after handling the eggs. DO NOT WASH THE EGGS. You further accept there may be delays in mailing or processing, issues that may be beyond control and are an inherent risk of mailed hatching eggs. No matter how well any eggs are packed, you will probably never have a 100% hatch.
Understand that YOU, the buyer, bear ALL the responsibility for your purchase of hatching eggs!!!

Very good advice on shipping eggs. I am glad I read up on the handling of shipped eggs before I got my first batch this year. This was the first year I was brave enough to get shipped eggs and so far looking good.

Good luck with your cockerels. I am planning to breed Orpingtons when I move to Ireland in 2 years, cause I figure I could sell the roosters for meat since they are so big.
