"Springing in the Chicks" 2016 April Hatch-a-Long Hosted by Mike & Sally

No I didn't mean dropped them on the ground. Sorry I can see now how you could think that. I meant dropped them in the incubator to hatch. All the eggs are fine. But thank you for your kind words. I would be devastated if I actually dropped them.

I read it the same way!

I went to bed early because I was exhausted and then woke up at 3am. This is all happening quickly, but #2 is OUT! #3 is pipped and # 1 is definitely internally pipped. No word from #4 yet.

Someone wants to say hello...

Oh wow!! Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Cynthia12 Rooster Collar?? What's that for?

@darkbluespace Seems like your pep talk with #2 worked!

@firedragon1982 Good Luck with your hatch! and as far as the 30 eggs, they were there the whole time, husbands pay so little attention Tehehe

Ha..only someone that is blessed enough to have enough land to have roosters would wonder. At least that's what I'm thinking..you are on a lot of land, have your roosters?
This collar makes it so they can't take a deep enough breath in to make that loud crow, so, they don't bother neighbors. I am in a neighborhood..homes pretty close. This is the first time I've had a collar work on one this good. I just may be able to keep him!

So out of 11 total in lockdown... 5 golden necked D'Uccles out so far, 1 Lav cuckoo D'Anvers. The other was DIS when i added some water and took some shells out... Did an external pip, but never broke internal membrane

So only one of my "special" babies survived

On a side note, Monday the dozen silkies and Mille Fleur D'Uccles go into lockdown... Not going to tell my husband about the 30 eggs I just received from the Post Office on Thurs...

Yep they just don't understand.

Who has time for a n00bie question.

It's day 15 1/2 in the brooder. I was penciling the air cells (is that the right verb for "tracing the air cells with a pencil?") and the air cells were quite obvious even with my weak candler. These are fairly dark brown eggs, so I've been struggling - first hatch and all. However, I also noticed that the eggs varied from one to another in this regard: the air cells were quite translucent, and the mass at the other end of the egg was fairly opaque unless I moved the candler. When I moved the candler to the other end of the egg I saw a semi-translucent with the opaque mass above it. Is that all simply lighting and the result of a weak candler or is there something else I should know. Some of the eggs had an obvious living thing in them, moving about etc. Others, the opaque mass was difficult to determine even a shape - I didn't want to have them outside the 'bator for very long.

What's my question? I guess it comes down to what was I looking at?

How did you talk him in to putting it on?

I have two RIR roos. Both are good with the ladies, but one never crows. The crowing rooster who helps the sun come up every day we call Brewster (the rooster). The other one is Silent Bob. I guess we should have named the other one Jay.

It wasn't easy!

I managed to squeeze 3 dozen Easter Egger eggs into my Incuview.
Nice!

Quote: Not me! I would NEVER enable!

I thought the Easter hatch was my last hatch of the spring, but then I lost a hen this morning. So naturally, I filled my incubator with as many eggs as possible.
Of course! It makes complete sense, totally logical

. Sorry about your hen though

You mean you haven't had any eggs in your incubator this whole time?! Since EASTER?!

How did you survive?

OK, I am way over-excited, but I had another call duck hatch (an egg I set a few days late cause it had a bad air cell) and it is so teensy and adorable. I hadn't even noticed how fast the others were growing until I saw them next to a tiny newly hatched one. The new one is less than half their size

You...are....looking at....very dark eggs! It's hard to see anything in those things. Especially the further along they get. You can either get into weighing the eggs as Sally has pointed out in one of her many great posts on hatching, or you can wait and see if the air sac gets bigger, draws down by day 18/19..or, just wait, and hope you don't have an icky egg. Yep, icky egg.
