"Springing in the Chicks" 2016 April Hatch-a-Long Hosted by Mike & Sally

Omg so i had chick fever and wanted to get some Speckled Sussex or Wyandottes when they come in or find different color Orpingtons and ohhhh I still do...

But now..

Those TSC chicks are soooo cute.

And we are going to have a whoooooleeeeeee empty coop once this one gets finished that I was going to just toss. And.. well... now THAT would just be a waste.

And even the guy at TSC said to fill it with more chickens!!!

And ANYWAYS.

Well now some certain enablers have turned me onto eBay for hatching eggs...

And let me just say...

Now I have HATCHING fever and want to hatch my own chicks.

Don't know if eBay would be good though, maybe local would be better.

And of course this is all just a dream right now but even my mom said maybe and I say we just simply CAN'T let that coop go to waste, right? Right!?

And it is best suited to a couple absolutely adorable pet bantams.

It must happen...

Simply must.

And I mean, we still have the heating pad from our last MHP plus a heat lamp if we must. Can't let that go to waste either. :p

Somebody tell me this is a bad idea. Convince me not to.

Bad plan..

I just KNOW you ENABLERS on here won't do that thougg and will tell me to get both the bantams AND more large fowl :p

Do it. Pick up some Pekin hatching eggs while you are at it! :yesss:

Thanks @BantyChooks
I don't know how to help myself either. Ugh. Maybe the blind leading the blind? No idea except I worry all my six will end DIS and I just can't stand it. Yes I'm a crybaby. I know it. I can take it.

Well, we can give moral support. If you don't get it this time, you will the next!! Hang in there!! :hugs :hugs

I cooked many eggs when I first tried, probably upwards of 6 dozen eggs

Oh Lordie! Don't tell me that!

I cooked 15. :/

I wouldn't be concerned just yet. Once they externally pip, it can take 24 hours before they begin zipping. As long as it's getting fresh air, it'll rest up for the big job of hatching. If nothing has happened in 24 hours, then you should see if it needs any help.

So you think it won't die or smother or something equally awful overnight? I don't want to abandon it. I just know if I keep watch over it all night I'm going to become apt to meddle with it. And I know I shouldn't. But there it is. A hole in its little shell. Poking at me poking at me. Look away!!

I can't help you much but I can ask you all the things they asked me my first hatch, March 31st, when I was nervous/anxious:
What is your humidity at?
Do you hear chirping?
How long ago did it pip? it take a WHILE to get out of the shell.
Did you read EVERYTHING on the Hatching 101 section in the "Learning Center"?

I am sorry it is stressful. I am a Tenderheart. I cry every time something dies around here; even animals that died in nature just doing what the circle of life is suppose to do. My first night of my hatch (took over 3 days from first noticed pip) I just finally went to bed so nature would take over.

Good luck!

Sounds like a plan to me. And it doesn't sound like your excitement has diminished any either! ;) No problem about those 4 dozen eggs, Sally...I'll take 'em. I've got room in my coop for 2 more chicks, and with my current track record that's all I'll end up with.
Don't give up!

Thanks. And yes I have devoured everything I could read on this site. Very informative. If only I hadn't missed the bits about humidity until I was already several days in. I followed the hovabators instructions instead. It calls for pretty high humidity from the get go. So I diligently complied. Naturally once I read further into this site I discovered that the manuals are no bueno and I ditched them and chunked an emergency pantyhose of of rice into the bator to suck up humidity. I kept it low for the last couple weeks like 25-30% until the pip. But the air cells are still too small compared to what they should be at this point. So. I'm worried. Ugh.
