"Springing in the Chicks" 2016 April Hatch-a-Long Hosted by Mike & Sally

The crooked neck chick just passed. :hit  The flipping chick is still hanging on. It is pretty active, just keeps getting stuck on its back.
I'm sorry!! The other one must be kinda funny to watch though

The flipping was amusing when i didn't know anything about wry-neck. Now that i know, it is very difficult to watch. The chick constantly gets stuck on its back. Sometimes I have to go take care of things and leave the chick unattended; when I come back the poor chick is laying there twitching miserably because it is physically unable to right itself.

If there is no improvement within the next 48 hours it may become necessary to cull the chick. Its inability to get around means it can't eat or drink on its own. In 48 hours it will be three days post hatch and the nutrients from the yoke will be used up. The chick will need to be able to eat by then to keep from starving. Sometimes being a chicken keeper means making the hard choices for the benefit of the animal.

Sometimes I put them in a berry box to keep them upright. It makes me feel better anyway. Sorry about your chick. I have had a number of chicks with wry neck that have fully recovered, the vitamins do work amazingly well.

I wouldn't give up on her so fast! I'd buy some poultry nutri drench as well as the other stuff. @TerryH just had a chick with it that was practically on death row for like 3 days straight, zero improvement those first few days but then magically she started getting better and by the end of the week she was much better and still is? The vitamins take a while to kick in because the body has to absorb them and heal and fix the problems. I say give her a chance. All the vitamins will help her to get the nutrients she needs even without the yolk. You can also try feeding her a little moistened food or cooked egg. Of course, Terry's chick rubbed her face on the floor and wasn't falling backwards and getting stuck but still.

@KDOGG331 and @darkbluespace
Thanks. There is minor improvement in righting itself. It still gets stuck but has been righting itself about half the time. Hopefully that will continue. It would be great if the chick improved so well that I couldn't distinguish it from the rest. Hoping and praying the little chick pulls through. Unfortunately, if the chick does pull through it will be stuck with the name Flipper.

No problem! I hope the little one pulls through :) I had a chick with a bit of wry neck who was walking around with her head on her back and sometimes stumbling but I didn't know what it was at the time so didn't do anything to treat it and I was so worried but she pulled through just fine and is fine now :) they're now about 6 months old. Of course, treating her would have been best but they're my first chickens. I hope yours pulls through :) and awww well you can pretend she was named after the dolphin lol

Congrats to everyone in the April HAL!!!!:clap

Thank you :) I feel like I've been blessed!! I placed my order for April in January and it was my first time ever ordering from a hatchery . I choose Meyer Hatchery for my chicks.i was really worried about the chicks long journey from Ohio to California where I live. I ordered 10 chicks,they hatched and shipped on the 11th and I received my chick's the afternoon of the 12th. All ten chicks came alive and well! Thank God! I'm so happy! Meyer did a most excellent job! Three weeks later all ten are growing and beautiful and healthy! They bring great joy into my life! From start to finish my hatchery experience has been absolutely wonderful. I highly recommend Meyer Hatchery to EVERYONE wanting chicks! When I started this thread, I didn't know what the outcome would be. I'm so happy to report that things went GREAT! I couldn't have asked for a better outcome! THANK YOU MEYER HATCHERY ♡♡ I love all ten of my chicks!♡♡ I'm so greatful they are doing well! :)
