Spur trimming frequency?

Thanks all for this very useful thread - as I am on my 1st rooster I still have a lot to learn. My boy about 3 was getting to the point I was thinking some spur work might be necessary - he seems to be sitting a lot and the spurs go straight inward toward the other leg, affecting his walking. Today I see one spur has broken off about half-way through, and the other is looking as if it might break: the farther half is greying. Do folks know if this is common? Sure is a nice and timely occurrence :D:D

Please post some pics of spurs?

If it helps, my last Cochin rooster had massive spurs. At two years old they were so big they were curving back and almost hitting his legs. At that point I trimmed them. When he was roosting at night I got behind him and clipped the ends with dog nail clippers; he was asleep and didn't even notice. He was a gentleman but No way was I going to stress him out by picking him up to do it.
Even as big as his spurs got they never bothered the hens even his favorite ones

I forgot to mention that my Cochin did shed a spur at one point, it was like you said. I just found it in the run, healthy spur underneath (About half the size) and no blood. I don't know if that's common or not. I still have it; it's about an inch and a half long and pretty neat.

Some roosters spurs grow so long it start causes them to trip.Until that happens,it really isn’t necessary. My rooster is three years and I have never had to trim, although I have tried,he usually flips out so I just decided to wait till it becomes an actual issue
