Spurs on hens

My friend has just rescued two hens from a neglectful owner.
They both have the most severe cases of scaley leg mite I have ever seen (for which I am treating them), and are absolutely terrified of being handled. When he picked them up, there was a dead chicken in the chook house and there was no food and very little dirty water for about ten chickens. I'm sorry he didn't report the owners to the RSPCA
Anyhoo, I've kept chickens myself for about 8 - 9 years and have never seen hens with spurs. These two have enormous ones! I'm wondering is this normal and can it cause problems for the hens?

It's not exactly normal, but its definitely not rare either. I have several myself, i think most have one on each foot, but a few only have one spur
