Squashed shell/egg? - day 19

Thanks for everyone’s help. It’s been about 12 hours since the egg was squashed and the chick has stopped moving in the egg. The veins in the egg have thinned but it hasn’t moved at all leading me to believe it’s gone. Some of the other eggs in the same clutch have hatched/beginning to hatch whilst this one is in the same position it was in last night. Usually I would put it in some water and perform the ‘float’ test to determine whether it is alive but I don’t think I can do that with this egg. Is there another way to tell if it’s alive or not?

Have you tried to candle it?
shine a bright flashlight into the air cell end of the egg and see if you see anything.
With as much membrane that's exposed I would say you'd be able to see if it was moving.
I don't recommend float testing anything. Candling is a better option. There could be a tiny crack in the shell that you may not even notice and can get in there. Putting water on an egg will actually end up wicking moisture out of the egg as well as giving it a chill.

I have tried to candle it but I can’t see anything, I think the air cell may have burst. I don’t think the chick is alive :( Thanks for your help though

In case it’s still alive, please do not put it in water. You can turn off the lights and shine a flashlight through the egg. This may show where the beak is, and like I said, where a tiny hole should be made to allow the chick to breathe. If the veins have thinned, the blood has to go somewhere, which usually is into the chick. That’s good. There is quite a resting period of hours during hatching. So it being quiet does not necessarily mean it’s dead. It will not be able to kick against the broken shell. How do I know this? It took 2 days for my squashed egg to hatch. Can you post a picture please?

I’ve tried to candle it but nothing can be seen from it and I can’t find where the beak would be to place a hole. It’s still in the DIY incubator.

This may not be the best information, however if the other eggs have started to hatch, IMHO you have nothing to loose by trying to help hatch this mashed egg. Go slowly, try to find an opening where the beak is, I hope you have luck with this chick, just know you have tried everything you could to help it along. Good Luck @Jadegle87
