I recently got a mottled java hen. She's in quarantine right now for about another week. By and large she looks good, clear eyes, no runny noses, etc. But in the last week or so when I try to get her in her single suite at night, if I go to grab her she squats low and sort of ... hard to explain she doesn't spread her wings but her... elbows? go out. She's calm when I pick her up and stuff but the stance is kind of odd.

I'm new to chickens, but I've read a bit, so I'm sure this is probably not unhealthy or something but I'm wondering if someone can tell me what that's all about. She lays, eats, drinks normal. And I'm not really worried about her health, just trying to understand what she's doing. (I almost want to say it looks like she wants someone to mate her but that can't be right, can it?)

Bingo!

I know, it sounds freaky. But it's a submissive gesture too, if that makes you feel any better.

lol get her a rooster, she wont do that any more for you!!!

My hen Frightful does it all the time, Crackers on occasion, but she is boss hen so I think she has a little bit more dignity.

Haha, ok well I guess my instincts were right!

Well she can have some roos when she gets out of isolation next week though they're not quite old enough for this business yet. But soon, soooooon. (heck maybe they are, I heard one out there crowing the other day)

Thanks!
