Squawking, screaming hen won't stop

Yes you can eat the egg. She was probably screaming because she didn't understand what was going on while trying to lay.

Depending on your relationship with the neighbors you might want to have a chat with them since egg laying often also leads to the egg song. Being a mile away from another city doesn't mean you're under that city's zoning (in my area the zoning differs by lot even within a single neighborhood) so you might want to make sure that the neighbors are aware and ok with it. Some eggs as bribes could go a long way.

Like with humans...... some are screamers when giving birth while others deposits babies as quickly and easily as an ATM machine spitting out nice crisp 20's.

Chickens can be very vocal for a number of reasons and in a number of ways. Today I was cleaning the coop and three hens were in the nest boxes. My oldest hen, Myrtle Mae, came in the coop and just started squawking over and over and over again. I couldn't take it! I picked her up and quietly told her that she was bothering not only her girl friends, but ME! I put her down and she shut up and left the coop! She didn't like me "messing" with "her" coop at all and let me know it.
