In one of my pheasant pens it has a peahen and lady amherst pheasants and I catch squirrels in there eating my bird seed. I've been to lazy to shoot them and they get in when I'm not home, because I always find tracks in the pen. My sister goes nuts and feels sorry for them when I trap them. I usually just let my hunting dogs out and some of the squirrels get lucky and make it to the trees, but some dont. But if they are eating in the area where my birds are could my birds catch anything thing from them. Thanks

i haven't a clue.. when i let my birds out to free range the first thing they run too is the wild bird feeders.. the squirrles eat there too... they stand under all the feeders and eat the dropped seed.. so far no trouble.

Squirrels are similar to rats in that they are largely vegetarian, but will also eat EGGS and MEAT (baby birds)
I doubt they carry any diseases that would pass to birds though

what do you feed your dogs my hens totally ignore dog droppings? my roo will lead the hens to the bird feeder every day, only feed sun flower and they love it. Have not noticed any sickness from the contact

In the southwest, squirrels and rats carry the Hanta virus... deadly to humans.

I wouldn't let my birds or hunting dogs near them. I always have bait tubes full out by the coop.

Your average squirrel only provides about 400 calories, but will really improve the taste of a pot of beans, or a nice stew...
