Sshhhhhhh .. raising chicks in an apartment.. eeek?! *pics*

we kept ours in our garden tub. they were a gift from grandaughter so we weren't expecting them.. i loved it but the dander was like dust all over the walls . was hard to keep down but would do it again in a heartbeat.. enjoy your new digs.. we built our home on 3 acres 2 yrs ago and it has been heaven..

They're beautiful chicks! Just be careful that your makeshift coop isn't too makeshift and allows predators to get in. Then it sounds like you'll be good to go!

Well, I've raised parrots in the house and I've had chickens on my very much attached back porch. I would raise parrots in the house again, but I'll NEVER

have chickens on the back porch again. The dander, the pine chips, the poo, the feathers, the STINK!!

Maybe your chickens are different than mine, but once they start getting feathers on them, you'll have to get them outside, because the smell will be overwhelming. I don't care how clean you are and how much you change the litter, it takes no time at all and the chicken poo smell starts to waft through the air. I LOVE

my chickens and I just recently brought a hen in the house for the night because I was worried about her being too cold (she's old), but she went back out in the morning.
I gotta laugh though

You sound just like me. I get the chicken, then run around fixin' up the place to put 'em. I keep telling myself, "NO MORE CHICKENS! until I have the proper facilities for them." But then I see just one more that I HAVE to have. Oh and by the way, my first chickens - I did exactly the same thing that you are doing, not the apartment thing, but they were the ones I had on the back porch. They might as well have been in the house because of the way the porch was attached to the house. What a nightmare. I can't stress strongly enough the urgency of preparing a safe place for your babies, outside, ASAP. You'll love them a whole lot more if you don't develop feelings of desperation to get them OUT OF THE HOUSE!!!

Good words of wisdom everyone ...

RE: safe digs .. The rabbit hutch is wood and wire .. snake proof .. so I'm certain they'll be safe in there (barring a bear .. eeek). I'll set the hutch INSIDE the dog kennel .. and they'll only be out while we are there until I can make the dog kennel as predator proof as possible ..

Like I said .. It's a race against time right now .. and I'm JUST starting to feel the pressure .. no desperation .. yet!
