St. John's Wort

Well, one of my favorite cockerels developed a completely limp/paralyzed leg today. He was fine in the morning, but now has no feeling from the hock down. No signs of breaks, swelling, or sprains; it does not hurt him to move the leg. He wasn't vaccinated for Marek's, and is less than a year of age, so I think that is what it is. Should I try Hypericum/St. Johns Wort? Does it seem like he is too severely affected for a successful treatment? It came on so suddenly, the poor bird. He's acting as normal as is possible with one leg, eating, drinking, feebly scratching with the paralyzed foot, etc.

if he were mine I would start with baby aspirin and rest, only because it might just be an injury, you know, and we've had birds recover with just rest and baby aspirin over a period of a couple of weeks. If he deteriorates, then I'd start with the Hypericum. Sparkle went from llimp, to bad limp, to flopping around unable to stand, all in a matter of a few days. So we were sure it was a neuro issue, and probably Marek's because of her age. If your cockerel deteriorates quickly, and he probably will if it's a neuro thing, then by all means get the Hypericum.. I thought that the Curcumin was a good follow up treatment, even though Sparkle didn't like that stuff. But it's a powerful anti-inflammatory with no known side effects, and it's inexpensive, too. We give injured birds two to three crushed Bayer baby aspirin per day, in a treat.

I know that you have to be careful with Hypericum, you do want to make sure it's a neuro thing.

The treatment was amazing. Sparkle has re-joined the flock and seems like she's getting better every day. Still watching her for a relapse, but so far, so good.

On re-reading your post, it does seem like he has nerve damage, but it could still be from an injury. I'd be inclined to still confine and watch him for a few days, but it's your call.

Thanks for the suggestions. I gave him some St. Johns Wort last night; he's no better this morning. Still acting cheerful and limping around, though. He walks on the top of the paralyzed foot. I'll continue treating for about a week, but if there is no improvement, I'll have to consider culling.

Follow the directions here if you're going to use it. 1 tab dissolved in 1 TBSP distilled water, twice a day. It takes a few days.

I couldn't find the tablet form. Right now, I'm using capsules of powdered St. John's Wort in the dosage you just listed. Will that work, too? I get him to drink about 1/2 - 3/4 of an eyedropper, making sure that he closes his beak and presses his tongue against the roof of his mouth as he swallows.

We have a barred rock pullet who caught Marik's. Without knowing Hypericum cured this disease,Mama gave some to her with hemp oil.Now we give it to her frequently.

I don't know if it will work. I think the Hypericum is more concentrated, but it IS SJW. I just don't know. Hypericum is inexpensive to buy though and a little goes a long way.
People can use it too.
