To date, I have lost 30+ birds to Marek's...to date, with hypericum treatment, I have yet to save one. I am not saying that some have had luck with it, I'm just saying that it doesn't work as well as some would say. I noticed that one bird would start to get better and I would stop treatment...she would immediately have a set back. If I didn't dose twice daily, she would slide backwards. She has held on for 7 months but has never regained use of her legs or wings. Now, the disease has spread and I fear that her days are now numbered and no amount of meds is going to help.

Since it worked for you you should start a thread that explains exactly how to use it and why it has to be one product and not the other. That's what I can do when I suggest to people how they can use Baytril, Safeguard (liquid or paste), Valbazen, metrondidazole, Corid, amoxicillin, Cipro, praziquantel, Clavamox, tube feeding, subcutaneous fluids, etc. Have posted many threads on how to use all of those, but if someone asks, I have no problem typing it again.

Seems like you're being very vague about how to use it, which doesn't seem right to me. Why are you so dead set against posting exactly how to use it? Pretty sure many people have gone out of their way when giving advise to you, yes?

I'm sorry you feel that way. I had no problems at all following the instructions from the OP

But are you sure this is Marek's? were any of the dead birds necropsied and confirmed to have marek's? Because it seems whatever they have is progressing very rapidly and could be something else altogether, and possibly you are treating them with the wrong antibiotics.

I am reading a lot about St john's worth, turmeric, silver, etc and i have to say my intial (and superficial!) conclusion is that these immune boosting/anti inflammatory natural methods are probably helping birds that do not actually have marek's, and instead have some minor ailment with similar symptons. Still worth keeping in the cupboard of course..they don't seem to harm, and only do nothing at worst.

Hi Seminolewind,

The vet advised that the test is a PCR (pelimenaraise chain reaction) test that looks for the DNA chain that holds the herpies virus and that its 99% accurate. The vet advised that the company that performs the test is called Molecular Diagnostic Services in South Australia (web site: http://www.mdsafrica.net/site/default.asp).

While talking to the vet he stated that when a chicken has Marik's Disease that's it for the chicken. He also stated that diagnosis with out tests like PCR may come out incorrect (speculations of MD but may be something else) and the chicken is medicated anyways with hypericum and they come out ok afterwards.

I guess what I'm looking for is if someone tested their chicken and it came back conclusive for MD and they then medicated the bird with Hypericum and the bird pulled through.

Boy Kathy, you went way back on that one! It would really cement this treatment if someone got a PCR (blood) before and after. And could show it. Heck, I think more than one person, maybe 100 people.

There are many diseases/illnesses that have symptoms just like Marek's . That makes it so hard to see if it really works, and that it was really Marek's and the herb caused the symptoms to go away. I have my own thoughts about some treatments out there for Marek's. But one thing is for sure. When it comes to Marek's, I would try anything and everything to please please help. I have so many graves out in the back yard I have to do them in rows because I don't know where I buried many of them. I suffer with every one. It would be nice to have some proven method other than hearsay that can help stop the sadness.

Latent periods are not unusual with Marek's Disease. In other words- even non-medicated chickens will show symptoms, appear to recover (or not get worse), show symptoms, recover, and so on. With or without hypericum or any other current therapy, this cycling is normal.

In these latent periods it is even possible for some individuals to not shed the virus and to test negative for Marek's Disease Virus. Most will still test positive and most will shed MDV but a few may appear "cured", though it is just temporary until the immune system is stressed enough to allow MDV to resurface from it's hiding place.
