Standard of Perfection

Collecting semen from a bantam Cornish cock.

Guess I need to try this with my Rosecombs. That way I can take the males away from the females. Question that I have now is, how often do you inseminate the hens. Everyday, once a week?

This is why I stopped breeding Bantam Cochins. Didn't like being that intimately involved with my chickens. :-]

I don't AI any of my birds. I just took that vid to show how it is done. Can't you get by with Cochins just plucking their vents?
There are very few ways in which I help my birds breed....shelter and feed is about it.

I have a friend that raises LF Cochins and all of his breeding is with AI. If this were Cattle or other animals that have proven superior sires and dams that a registry record is there to verify performance of progeny then I might have an interest. As it is I raise several breeds of LF and bantams, and if they are unable to breed naturally and prolifically they would be gone post haste!

It's a a fun 3 days reading the archive of this list. Thank you so much for shairng with us! I don't need to tell
anyone who knows me how passionate I am about the old poultry lit, smile.
Dr. Miller did you know poultry judge and breeder, W.H. Card. He is Danne Honour's uncle's uncle. I found a little book he
wrote on poultry breeding laws and have been using its advice to help my breeding choices. http://tinyurl.com/2ek3ugl
Currently,I have 2 BTB Marans and getting some started Light Sussex (non Australian line) this Spring.
I have just this winter, after 2 years in poultry, started to dig beneath the featfers to find out what else makes a proper chicken beside silouette
and plumage. It's just fascinating. How the points of the head, measurements of the body, texture of skin, and type of feathers all tie together.
Until this thread,I didn't think the SOP addressed all this. Now I need to go buy a copy and read more. I did find an old British booklet on-line.
Written by William White Broomhead. 9 pages long on the Light Sussex. http://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/009169678

Judge Broomhead also talks about how the skin , feather , fat, and
and other things "inside the bird" make a proper chicken. How breeding to the SOP brings all those factors into balance with each other.
One thing he mentions is the size of the hen. He says he has never seen a layer of a notable number of eggs which weighed over 7 lbs.
Some strains of modern Sussex are much heavier than that. Does the 7 lb. limit still hold true? Or has poultry breeding since 1922 made that
fact obsolete? What would you consider the upper limit in weight for a good egg layer from a dual-purpose breed?
Thanks so much for sharing with us. I feel priviledged to read your writings.
Best Regards,

How old do birds need to be for AI to work? I fooled around with a couple of my 11 week olds - Silkie and Ameraucana. Suffice to say, I have new best friends.

I got a very 'moist' response out of the Silkie (who is crowing) and I believe I saw the male parts. Got a very happy, co-operative response from the Ameraucana but not so convinced I was as successful with him - although he was putty in my lap for about 15 minutes following his stroking - and I swear his comb pinked up in front of my very eyes!
