Starting a hatch September 21....hatch along?

Cute, Nelson!

I don't have broody hens unfortunately so have to take the 'bator route. Here are some of the new arrivals.

2 eggs left in incubator but no signs of life so I think 4 is my lot. Not too bad. These are the first ones hatched from my own stock rather than brought in.

Okay, I am officially on lock-down for my incubator eggs. I am all set up. The humidity has jumped to 68% with the washcloth I put in. Should I keep it at 68% or should it be higher? I keep hearing about drowned chicks and I don't want to do that but I also hear so many get shrink-wrapped and I don't want that either. This is the stressful part for me.

That was the stressful part for me, too. Thankfully, it turned out OK and we ended up with four beautiful, healthy chicks. I have no idea what our humidity was. Our little Mini incubator didn't have that capability.

First one out. Sadly, this one has an extremely severe cross beak and is missing an eye. I'm hoping this was caused by the fact that the egg came from a hen who was hatched from trader joes eggs, and not because my beautiful incubator screwed up. I'd post pics... But is a little graphic.

I'm sorry!

really a few days will make that big a difference---- I wonder if I put them in the incubator for their lock down if I can save them??? Hmmmmm

well that happens I've found a couple of extra eggs woth her and i have removed them cause they wont hatch even iff they form after a couple of days she will stop sitting on them and if they do hatch the older chicks migth kill them

I feel like I've hit the chicken lottery! I found a beautiful black & white chick today under my broody. I looked and the dark Wellie & Maran eggs I bought are unhatched. Also the blue eggs are still there. Then I saw an open light brown egg shell and thought it might be the Delaware egg but when I checked the pictures of Delaware's they are yellow chicks.
Sooooooo, coming into the world earlier than all the others is a mutt chick that was laid after my purchased eggs.
I guess she heard your warning and jumped to the front of the group for safety's sake

it was quite a surprise for me.

Now I can't figure her looks at all. Her Mommy is a mixed breed, half silkie and half Speckled Sussex. Her Daddy is either my young Wellie Roo or my Oxford Old English Game Bird Roo. She is a penguin.

and she had better be a hen because I'm in love already.

Well, my broody hatched two today but nothing since around early afternoon. I hope there are more to come. Everyone is bedded down in the coop so I have to wait for morning to see if there will be anymore.
I had chirping earlier today from the incubator, Yes---I am doing both ways, but now all is quite. So I am in the WORRY mode thinking about opening the bator, knowing I need to be patient.

Patience isn't my strong trait when it comes to hatching.

I managed to get a pic of the baby's good side. He's still very active, and seems to be able to walk and talk just fine.

Awww. Poor baby. I had a parakeet for quite a long while that had a crossbeak worse than that. It seemed to do OK. I always felt bad for it, but it managed to live a good life.

Chicks4fun - what a cute "penguin" baby!

Here are my 4 little chicks...

I don't think that 5th egg is going to hatch. But, 4 out of 5 is pretty good. They are quite the spunky little lot.
