Starting a hatch September 21....hatch along?

my eggs have been in an incubator for 24 days now, and i still have no chicks... i have candled them and i can see a few moving. it looks like some of the chicks may be a little further behind than others in size. is that a problem? and should i keep turning the eggs? or should i just give up on them? like i said i can see them moving when i have the light to the shell... please give me some advice!! thanks!

If they are moving after 24 days, stop turning them, let them set so they can get into position and hatch. Go into lockdown. Up the humidity per the directions of your incubators (the process is different for every model). If they are chicken eggs, you should stop turning around day 18.

Here's a few of yesterday's refrigerated mutt baby pictures...

Meet Blackie, Latte, Cocoa and Rocha. Cocoa and Rocha look suspiciously roo-ish to me. Plus, they are quick to run up and peck at the hand that feeds them.

I love how they play together.

Blackie is a pretty little thing. I sure hope s/he's a girl. She's has the prettiest chick face I have ever seen.

I finally opened that remaining egg and it looked like it may not have been fertile. So, I'm done this time around with 4 sweet little babies. Now I'm hoping for 3 girls out of the tiny flock. I already have 3 big girls, and I'm only allowed to have 6 chickens total.

We have a tiny incubator that only holds 7. What my husband did to get the chicks out was steam up our small bathroom with a lot of steam, then he got the chicks and the extra shells out that way. He had no choice to do that - one pipped and zipped and then got stuck because the other two chicks pushed their empty shells on top of it. Opening in the steamy bathroom didn't seem to bother the partially zipped one at all. S/he manage to fully zip out about 4-5 hours later.

thanks, I did the steamy bathroom trick I saved two and lost two. I have five eggs left with on chick bouncing around the incubator. These eggs were due today so I hope by tomorrow the rest will hatch or I will know if they are quitters.
Since the final 5 have not pipped and I was careful I hope they are okay.

I just love these pictures. Esp the 1st one with Latte, so cute. Hope you got your three girls.

they are chicken eggs. we aren't "growing" them in an incubator, we have them in an aquarium with a heat light and thermometer. the temp right now is 102 degree F... i am not sure about humidity, i have a bowl of water setting in the tank with them. i also pour some water under the eggs every few days. (they are sitting on a towel) not much water.. when should i give up? i dont want to throw them out if they are moving but i don't know how long to leave them in.. or if i can help them along and crack them out??? thanks!!

Thats a tough situation. Definately don't throw them out if they are still moving, they still have a chance. Depending if your tempatures were a bit low, they can hatch late. I've had some hatch as late as day 26. And I know another person who had one hatch on day 27. You can help at a certain point, but it's really hard to decide when you should help. You can easily kill them if you help just the littest bit too soon. Are the eggs completely dark other than the air sac? Do you see a black shadow moving in the air sac? That will help tell whether or not they are ready. If you want to know how to help a chick, I can explain it too you, it's not that hard. The thing people have trouble with is when to help.

Awww. I'm sorry. Did you manage to save two pipped eggs in additon to the wet chicks, or just the two wet chicks? I hope what worked for us with our small incubator didn't mess things up for you. From what I understand with incubating, it is very different depending on the incubator used.

Yes, I saved two from eggs and my wet chicks made it also.
I started with 18 eggs. Nine in an incubator and nine under my broody hen. I have 11 chicks, I've put all of them under my hen for now but I will need to figure something else out as she is kinda small to keep them all warm.
Anyway, I did an eggtopsy today for remaining eggs. From the looks of it 3 were duds (yucky liquid), 2 died trying to hatch (pipped but stuck in egg) and two quit earlier as they still had a yoke.
So I had over 60% live birth and I have more chicks than I really need so all is well. The down side is it looks like all the Welsummers are boys. I really wanted a Wellie Hen. That's the way it goes with hatching.
