Starting a hatch September 21....hatch along?

its not moving....what should i do?? i can see all of the beak...

If you are really worried, I would carefully make the hole a little bigger. If it starts to bleed, stop; if he starts moving again, stop. Just use a treezers to break off a few small pieces of shell around the pip. I can instruct you on how to help, but most likely either he isn't ready, or he passed away in the shell.

well it didnt make it.. it may be gross but i opened the egg (after i was sure it was too late) and the chick had what looked like to be a small yolk still attached to its tummy.. im very new at all this so i dont know what that was or if it was normal..i think i will try hatching some again soon.

I walked into the kitchen today and I heard loud peeping and I thought for a second that maybe one of my five from last week's hatch had somehow gotten out of the brooder and wandered into the kitchen (brooder is in the laundry room, right off the kitchen).

hen I realized the peeps were coming from my incubator! I had one little guy/gal newly hatched and 2 or 3 more pipped!

I just watched #2 hatch and the two hatched chicks are peeping at the others to hurry it up!

I love this whole hatching a day early thing! I hope I get a good hatch rate from these 6!

Laura, I hope your little one is fine. I don't know much about it, so I'm not a person who could help.

Cochins - why do they die in the shell? I've heard of that happening to quite a few people, but how do they that far along and then suddenly die while it is trying to hatch?

There are a number of reasons. And sometimes it just happens. Reasons also depend on what stage the chick died during. If it internally pipped but never externally, it could have drowned or suffocated or a a number of other reasons. Sometimes you find fully formed eggs that never even internally pipped. Some might not have been able to get into hatching position and were unable to hatch being at the wrong eng (though some can). Ummm.. there are a million other reasons, and sometimes we just don't know why. I can't really just radle reaons off of my head. I would need to be given a particular situation and what the findings are after the fact to try to determine a cause.

In laura's case, I don't know what happened. If it's beak was moving around and the incubator had proper ventilation, it shouldn't have suffocated. It hadn't been hatching for that terrible long. It should have rested up and then zipped around, why it didn't, who knows. It's also a very exhausting process. If the chick was weak, maybe it was just unable to take it all in.

Yay! Congradulations and good luck!

I just placed another order for eggs even though the tempatures have become near freezing, hahaha. I just couldn't resist.

I know how you feel! It truly is an addiction! Hubby is going to have to work very hard to keep me from starting another hatch this year!
