Another option would be to look on Craigslist for local people selling chicks. Most sellers will be willing to allow you to look at their pens and adult birds to gauge the conditions in which they are kept and the general health of the birds before you purchase any of their chicks. I didn't know this was an option, so ordered from a hatchery. This turned out to be so much more expensive because of the shipping fees, and there is also risk of losing chicks in shipping. After placing the order, I found some chicks locally. The con of buying locally is that you still have the risk of ending up with more roos than you want.
