Hi,
I'm new to the area and chickens as well---originally from Wisconsin, moved to Loudoun County in June. Have 8 young hens (just about to lay!) with a few more chicks on the way in the next few weeks. I am worried about foxes as well---my hens free-range all day---but have some pretty good shelter from the sky and seem to instinctively know where to hide when they hear a hawk. But I do worry about the ginormous fox-wolf-dog thing that roams the area---its as big as a German Shep. but looks like a fox---have no idea what it is. Everyday I take the dogs out to walk the perimeter and do dog things---hoping to convince the foxes that they don't want to hang around. Even dumped dog poop in their holes. :) Kinda gross but hope its working. 10 acres surrounded by countryside is not easy to keep predator free. Good luck on keeping those hawks at bay!

Welcome to BYC from Northern Virginia! Hope you enjoy your chicks! Let me know if you're ever interested in trading or purchasing some chicks together.

YEA! Thanks--would love to meet you. I actually all of a sudden am overrun with chicks as I picked up a part-time (#2) job at Southern States (great discount) and just today had a customer come in that wanted me to take over fourteen 6-week-old chicks because he just found out he has to move---I already have 5 big girls, twelve 5-6 week olds, 10 babies and two incubators full. Let me know what you might be interested in!!!
