Starting to Evaluate Breeders for Spring

Finally found Bob's thread. Yes it is a good one.

I can't find the one a few poultrymen did maybe eight years ago that would feature a new breed each week. Below is Fred's Plymouth Rock thread that has good info and eye candy.

Good threads start then can get cluttered. Not sure how this one below turned out. Yet to read it all.

Blue Jersey Giants have slate legs, and they are an American breed.
Why are slate legs a no no in American breeds? Is it for cultural reasons?
This is a very interesting thread.

Jersey giants should have willow/green or black legs

Do Black, White, and Blue Jersey Giants all have the same standard for their legs?

Well, I wasn't planning to hatch in January, but today I sold my 12-week crossbreed culls at $15/pullet and $5/cockerel in only 2 hours on Craigslist, so I'm considering putting a batch into the incubator even though the eggs in the basket on the table aren't sorted by breed much less individual hen (I can tell the ones from the California White, of course).

There's a chick shortage here so I suppose I can afford to hatch some more possible crossbreeds before I separate out the best hens and make a hatch of only their eggs.

So I just checked a couple of pages from the standard from 2010, and it says that the black have “nearly black with a tendency towards willow; black preferred.” White says “Dark willow.” And the blues say “Nearly black with dark slaty blue, with a tendency towards willow; black preferred.” So the short answer no.

Does this mean that slate would be an acceptable word to use since it says slaty blue? Or no?

You could use the word slate, but genetically Jersey giants should have yellow legs with a dark wash, creating black or willow legs. (Slate legs are pink/white with a dark wash, so are a different set of genes.)
