Starving chicken: a true mystery

I recently read a thread about this and they used the "3 day treatment" (higher dose than the 7 day)
of vaginal suppositories.
Give the hen 1/3 of a suppository, by mouth, 3 times daily.
(So, that's 1 whole suppository divided into 3 doses, over the course of each day, for three days.)

If it were me I'd certainly give it a try.
You have nothing to lose at this point.

What you suggest is the same as the half an inch of vaginal yeast cream I suggested. The cream is the same thing as suppositories, and either will work.

But I still recommend the whole seven days, since I've seen the yeast return when I tried to shorten the one week treatment. I just hope she lasts that long.

Thanks for reminding us that the gut flora needs to be replenished. I would include a tablet of acidophilus each day.

Just go to Walmart and get the Equate vaginal yeast cream. (Miconazole 7)

The dose is half an inch of cream squirted onto your finger to start. Do it again just before bed.

Continue for a full seven days total, twice a day, a quarter to half an inch.

Yes, all her symptoms could be from sour crop. If your vet hadn't ruled it out, I would have suggested starting there.

There are two possible reasons for her decline. For whatever reason, she is starving to death and has come close to the point of no return. Or she has cancerous tumors throughout her body and she is losing the battle to maintain bodily functions.

If she has a sour crop, she will feel better within just a day or two, and her appetite should start to return. I would start off with chopped hard-boiled egg after she's been on the miconazole for a day.
Ok, silly question, but once I squirt the cream on my finger, do i open her beak and just smudge it in little bits at a time for her to swallow? I also have a medicine dropper but am thinking it'll be too thick.

Hey everyone - I can't thank you enough for all of your help here. lisasea is my better half and we've been doing everything we can to save this poor hen. I'm about to go pick up the Miconazole.

So - keep her on probiotics in water + nutri drench + Miconazole or should we be moving to stop some of this other stuff while we try the Miconazole?

Thanks a bunch

I'm chiming in one more time.
I'm all for a 7 day course of treatment but I believe getting her to eat a few small chunks of miconizole in the suppository (ovule) form would be easier than the cream.

The math works out like this:
Miconizole 7 (cream) is miconizole nitrate 2% = 100 mg/full daily dose

Miconizole 3 (in cream or suppository) is miconizole nitrate 4% = 200 mg/full daily dose

I'd purchase the 3 day version (4% miconizole nitrate) so you have less of a struggle getting it into an already stressed bird.

@azygous helped me though an impacted, sour and pendulous crop (all in the same hen, a black austrolorp to be exact). We continued the Nutri-Drench, probiotics in water and Miconazole together. The Nutri-Drench was the first thing to drop off once she was doing better. Since your girl is loosing weight, I would imagine that it would help her to feel better to continue it. I will continue to monitor here if I can help in the crop issue. I remember the feeling of hoping someone would reply soon!
