starving duck help

I researched this sight and/or someone said to give him chopped tomatoes and garlic. I since stopped. I was also told to add grit, sand. I just put some in his food should I change his food out and eliminate this? I feed my chickens flock food since not all are laying and put oyster shell on side. I thought this food should be okay for the duck. I have made his water up today with oxytetracycline. Mixed the flock food with grit and oat and mealworms. Also added a seperate dish with lettuce and peas. I soaked both feet half hour in epson. Sprayed iodine, neosporin and wrapped. Put him back in dog cage after cleaning again, new straw etc., added fresh water with oxytetracycline. He isn't moving much or eating, might because his feet are wrapped. I checked to see and made him get up and he did okay. Bandages are loose, but I think both feet at once might be strange for him to work with. But he seems to eat at night, so I will know tomorrow if his feet are restricting him. I guess searching this web sight advise isn't always good. I was wondering we have adult amoxicillin, penicillin, would this work for ducks as a strong treatment, but very small dosage?

Just the flock food would be fine for him, but if he eats what you've given him at night then leave it at that... at this point whatever he will eat I would be inclined to let him have... but if he leaves the veggies then you can wait on those til he's better...

Good job on the feet... it's a pain in the @$$ and takes time to clear out and heal, but you're doing great...

I'd wait on trying the other antibiotics and not sure about using them... @casportpony might be able to help with that, if you know the mg per of what you have... she's the meds dosage expert of BYC... ;)

I am really trying the best I can. I do not no anything about ducks. So far I did alot wrong, yogurt, grit, garlic. I am trying to keep the little guy get healthy, his feet are the highest priority due to infection issues, second his under weight. He was not given a very nice beginning since he was born approx around april. I am stressed about the other two remaining ducks out of ten. The owner of this property is moving and i am very sad that the other two are just as bad.

Hardly a med expert, but I do know that the amoxicillin dose for ducks is about 56 mg per pound, which is quite a bit more than humans and pets get.

Must see poop pictures before I can comment on giving antibiotics.

Stop right there!! :hugs

You did NOTHING wrong!

You are absolutely doing your best, not your fault someone else abandoned them and another that said they would care for them did not keep up their responsibilities...

And a little yogurt would not hurt him... so don't worry... he would be worse off if he hadn't found you...

Myself, Amiga and Kathy all have ducks... we're more than willing to help you... just keep updating and asking questions... and don't let ANYONE make you feel like you are or will fail him, because in just trying you HAVE NOT! :hugs

You are a 'dosage' expert though, lol... :D

I recommended a mild antibiotic due to his badly infected foot... that looked way too close to bone for comfort... was worried about it going systemic...

Thank you, I am trying he gives me those eyes that he knows I am trying to help. Again every night I don't know if he will be with us but I am trying to my best to give this chance, so sorry I have screwed up along the way.

No need to be sorry, there's nothing to be sorry for... I truly hope he pulls through for you... :hugs

Is there any way to look for the other ducks? Company might also help him keep fighting...

Please let me know if I should give him heaver dosage with humane dosage. Please look at the pictures I submitted on his feet. He is eating or drinking today, but hopefully tonight like the last few nights.
