ConNooga or ChattaCon. I've been to ChattaCon twice, but only in the Firefly costume. Had a blast both times.
Some aspects of the Steampunk costuming can actually be worn in "real life".....you just might get a few odd looks. The Victorians really knew how to dress!
I go to Chornonaut here in san diego on a regualr basis.
My "costume" isn't very outlandish....I have a brown leather hat, black chefs jacket(trust me it works) brownish pants, calf high "captain's" boots, thick black belt with a 1890 Cutlass with scabbart.
I'm going for the "adventurer/swashbuckler" type look.
I'm working on a steam powered ray gun and I'll switch between the cutlass and the gun.
I'm also learning how to sew my own stuff, so far I have made a steampunk vest (not so good...first try), 1890 era pants, with "braces" to hold them up, and last night I started sewing an 1890 era shirt.
I'm going with the plain work shirt this time, when I get better at tailoring, I'll make a dress shirt. then go back and make a better looking vest with brass buttons etc...
Remember the motto, "Steam Punk is Victorian with Brass, Glass, Wood, and imagination."

I think it was ChattaCon Brian went to...
DD already gets some odd looks. She's very tall. And she loves hats so I'm sure a few other details and she'd be right in the SteamPunk thing. She already loves SteamPunk-style jewelry although she doesn't know that's how it would be labeled.
Best of all, she LOVES sewing and making her own garments. She's made several outfits she calls 'Cosplay' items. They're really cute, but most are just not something the admin will let her wear to school each day
