Her pupil looks so small and with the hazing over the eye, it's starting to really look like it could be Ocular Mareks. I've never dealt with it though, so I don't know. I hope it's an injury.

We lost one Black Australorp to a Coopers Hawk today and one Buff Silkie earlier this week to presumably the same hawk.

I fixed the place where the silkie was pulled through the fence.

Is it just me or is this year particularly bad for hawk attacks?

It seems to be worse in the Fall to early winter. There is less game and some are migrating.

Sorry you lost the Australorp and Silkie!

sorry about that. Hawks can sure be pests. Hopefully it wasn't the same bird as it may stick around a bit. I hope it just passes through. if it does it will be back though in the spring so keep that in mind and get them hiding spots cover there runs or at least put up things to make it think twice

I hate hawks. I have to keep my runs covered with net at this house or I wouldn't have a bird left. We have a large stand of pines, redwoods and oaks and they just hang out in those trees and wait.

Quote: My bantam pen is covered with netting but my large fowl pen is enormous and isn't. I have never lost a fully grown chicken to a hawk before. It is quite a shock. I had believed that they were OK out there. My BA was standing next to the tall bantam coop, which I believe enabled the hawk to have the element of surprise.

I am going to have to place a hawk shelter in that location.

That's too bad. And they're migrating now, too, so it's worse at this point in time.
Thank you. I wish my cockerels were a bit beefier right now...they may be able to help defend when they are full grown.

I'm so sorry. I agree with everyone else, this time of year is tough with them migrating.
Thanks to you also for the condolences.
