Potato soup is scrumptious!

Yes it is! And this is SO much better than the canned stuff. We didn't have any ham so he crumbled up some of our hot pork sausage in it and it was great.

Tom just made some of his homemade potato soup, so it was any other day, as is most any holiday most other folks celebrate.

I love potato soup!

Has anyone ever had chicks that never learned to go into he coop at night? I am getting worried about the five youngest BCMs in one coop and a silly SFH in another. I have to manually put them in every night.

My Breese still sit on top of the coop. Their coop is small and they are not thrilled with it.

My Bresse did that until the last wind storm. They go into the coop now. I guess they had enough of it. I so have one that was pecked on that still wants to roost on a pallet next to the fence. She laid two eggs out there last week. She is Mental!(from being pecked in the head?)

I hate it when they do that. I think you just expect them to be smart like Icelandics.

Time for us Northern CA folks to prepare for this storm coming on Tuesday. Looks like it's a cold one (highs in the low-mid 40's and lows in the 20's) It also looks like we may get some snow. High 60's to snow, what a temperature change. I'm going to have to shut down the auto waterers for the chickens. I've been loading the bees up with food every day so they have enough to get through the cold spell.

Yes, I need to get a roof attached and on Monday night I will fill the inside feeders.

We did get snow five or six years ago. If it snows here, it has to be an odd storm that comes from the with north wind or changes to North wind at the very end of the storm system--Usually in January though.

I would be shocked if it snowed here.

Just got back from breakfast out and a trip to Hobby Lobby with $50 worth of yarn, courtesy of my son, Michael, and his birthday gift card. On the way back, we encountered, three, count 'em, THREE, black bears, and a horse drawn covered wagon. Tom's recipe for Kelly or whoever else wants it.

Potato soup is so easy. Depending on how many you're serving, just peel and chunk up a few pounds of potatoes (we used about 5 lbs for us and had tons of leftover soup). Cube them big so when they cook down, you still have some chunks in there, it's not all mush.
Put in plenty of water because it will simmer for several hours. Put a can of chicken broth or stock in it.
Crumble up some pork sausage (dont have to cook it first) or ham into the soup.
Add salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, parsley flakes ( you can use chopped flat leaf parsley instead if you want fresh). Use the salt according to your own taste, of course.
Add 1/2-3/4 stick of butter and about 1/2 cup of half and half or cream. Stir periodically and when it starts to thicken on its own.
Then mix 1/2 c. milk, half and half or cream with about a tablespoon of cornstarch and one of flour and mix up well, pour into the soup and stir to finish the thickening process.

forecast doesn't seem to think our area will get enough moisture with this cold system to result in snow -- but i'll keep my fingers crossed anyway!
