We had 28F yesterday, seemed almost like summer, the chickens thought so too, the roosters were calling every time I opened the door. I really got to get a couple broody pens built, two of the pullets are on the nest whenever I look in the pen.

I am looking for an Icelandic dog this year, a puppy actually, it has to be a small pup to grow up with the 3 resident cats. They might drown an older dog if it got rowdy with them, but they would tolerate a puppy that gave them their proper deference. I think that the mother cat might even allow pillow rights.

Life goes on, and its pretty good, but I sure get hungry looking at Michaels dinners !

good luck with the search of the puppy. we have 2 old labs 12 years old this year. I want a Redbone Coon Hound for our next dog to help keep local critters at bay
most of the time you have to put a deposit down and get on a waiting list . at least for the few breeders that are this side of the Rockies.
so we are debating doing that. probably wait though. it would be nice to have them teach the new guy some but lol they have too many bad habits.

Our animal control and the local shelters always have redbones in their inventory. So sad that so many of those beautiful dogs are dumped or lost. I love hounds, especially of that type.

hmm wonder if they would let someone from across the country adopt?
The only problem though is bad habits are hard hard to break.
I want a dog that will follow me around everywhere. my one dog does that. the one we adopted is a escape artist which limits what we can do with them.
such a shame to as she is the sweetest dog ever

exactly right. I want a puppy to raise up to train around my chickens if we ever got another dog, which is probably not going to happen. Really cannot afford to own another dog, but I'd want one that I could have outside most of the time to watch out for the property and the birds, so a smooth coated dog wouldn't work, much as I adore the hounds. I see redbones here all the time.

Unfortunately redbones are hunting dogs. They are not the type to just lay about and watch a property. All hounds I have seen are usually kenneled in some way until they are taken out to hunt. I could not personally handle that.
I like my dog able to run free too. Definitely pups are the best to start with. If they are left free to run about and are given a good home with lots of love, they are more likely to stay home. Neutering is def. nec. for an animal to stay home. Its always a tossup as to what their personalities will be. We had a great mother dog who had pups and not a one of them had any sense or could be trained ???? Good luck with your search.

No dog runs free here, unless it's within the fenced perimeter. A hunting dog wouldn't like to stay in the fence with all the game around here. I'd probably get a shepherd type puppy if we ever got another, but I'd have to restrain my husband from letting it in the house since all our dogs have been kept in the house, all being short or smooth coated. My wraparound porch has power outlets so I could put a dog house with heated pad on there for any dog to be comfortable all year round.

All in the training no kennels here

Well, technically, all Labs are hunting dogs. My last dog was a pointer/lab. She had the softest mouth. I remember one day she was let out of the small picket fence to roam the larger 2 acre fence and she was coming toward me, very slowly, head down, obviously carrying something in her mouth. She was walking so gingerly, I thought she had an animal in her grasp. I said with some trepidation, "Kes, what do you have?", then "Put it down". When she got to my feet, she oh-so-carefully laid a chicken egg at my feet that I recognized belonging to one of my sweet little poufy headed hens-Tux had "velcro fluff" and her egg would sometimes stick to her and would loosen and roll off in odd places around the yard when they free ranged.
When I picked up the egg, I could smell it right away. There was a tiny pinhole in one end and it was so darn rotten, whew! I couldn't believe she didn't try to eat it or that it didn't explode in her mouth. I miss that sweet old dog. She died the month after Suede did at almost 15 years old.

My FIL is back home. He has chosen to take no treatment for his cancers. Hospice is involved and will come twice a week. As of last night, my DH's younger brother is also in the hospital (he has COPD as well). They think he may have a clot. He's been completely confused about everything lately, calling my SIL one night at midnight to tell her it was snowing, thinking it was 9 a.m. (how would you look out at midnight and think it was 9 in the morning?). So, my DH is a mental mess himself as are his sisters. This winter has been bad on all fronts.

Edited to add left out word...guess I'm a mess, too, eh?
