I wanted to share a neat chicken carrier I bought at an antique store yesterday. I have been admiring it for almost a year but didn't want to spend $50 on it. Yesterday it was on Craigslist for $39 so I got in the car and went to get it. I almost couldn't find it because it had been moved so I thought I had missed out. But then I found it and brought it home. Tag says it was found in an old barn in Nevada County which is where I live! It is about three feet long and HEAVY. I am going to take the hardware cloth off because it looks too new and use it for display. I just ordered a lifelike hen sitting on eggs. I'll put her in the middle box and probably have it on the front porch.

The openings for putting the birds in are spring loaded hinges on the back.

I just love old pieces like this!
That is so cool!

Did anybody make corned beef today? I made corned beef two way, one roasted with sweet, hot mustard and one simmered on the stovetop with onions, carrots, parsley, and thyme. Michael liked the roasted and I like the boiled. Go figure. I served it with a hot mustard horseradish sauce, boiled red potatoes, carrots, cabbage, and Irish soda bread.

For dessert I made Dubliner's Finest Whiskey apple cake. Oh my. Pics tomorrow. I am too tired tonight! Here's a quick pic of the cake.

Soda bread? I thought you were making potatoes?

You were going to make potatoes and I was going to make soda bread. You made soda bread, and I made potatoes.

Yum!

We didn't cook, we went up the road to a buffet. They had all the traditional stuff and then some.

That cake looks good!

Aimee's Belgian d'Anver chick has hatched already. Today is Day 18. I separated her from the chaos in that coop until the baby is bigger. All the other chicks are LF, 3 and 4 weeks old now.
Congrats!

The cake wasn't quite sweet enough on the inside. I am going to try it again but caramelize the apples before adding them. Hope I don't make any Dubliner's mad!

That's a great idea. Unfortunately, we don't have any buffets nearby. Probably a good thing since my house is pretty much a buffet! A bloggers gotta' do what a bloggers gotta' do!
