Stella's Social Club

Well, then, that must mean that you moved.................................................Stella too? How did that go with the gypsy?

Glad Lukka is safe and sound with her babies. I hope the move with the rest of the Icelandics goes well. And hopefully the little Isbar finds her way back to the new coop.

We haven't moved the Icelandic are my three Cream Legbars that live down at the barn. That will happen tonight. We were mainly trying to get the birds in the coop next to the turkey coop moved in case the raccoons returned last night.

Lukka is wandering around inside the coop with her babies. So cute.

The Isbar escapee was out in the yard today pacing the fence by her friends. I opened the gate and she went right in! I will be doing some re-homing to decrease numbers in the small coops. She will be at the top of the list! I have some cream legbars that are too brightly colored for the UK SOP so I think I will move them to the layer coop and not breed them. I will probably add a couple more dark egg layers as well.

Stella comes home tonight to much disappointment I am certain. Oh well. Gypsy or not, she's in the fenced run, under the flight netting tonight!

I can use a few legbar hens for my olive egger project with my crele penedesenca rooster Rocky. Especially if they have two much gold in them.

especially if they have this coloring in them or similar. I have seen some with more gold than salmon or lighter coloring in the neck and chest.
this is a crele penedesenca hen

My chickens got a high protein treat today. I had leftover soup that I was tired of eating. It has beans and ground pork sausage, with pasta and veggies - added some cooked scrambled eggs to it and they went bonkers over it.

Sounds delicious!

Has anyone ever read "The Problem with Chickens", its a children's book set in Iceland. Link to book: http://www.indiebound.org/book/9780618585816

Mary so sorry to hear of MORE trauma with your babies! Hope the rest of the move went smoothly. Is that the last of the animals then? Got your package Saturday afternoon- a few broken ones but I think 17 made it in good shape. A few had star cracks and a few were just a seam crack, and one was crushed. Is it possible they froze in the mail? We had a freeze Friday night. :( How will that affect the hatch? Going to set them tomorrow once the ones in the bator finish hatching.

The shells on the Isbar eggs have been thin recently. I need to refill the oyster shell calcium. I have an egg eater and I think the weak shells have something to do with it. You can put a little melted candle wax on the hairline cracks and those eggs could hatch just fine. I do it all the time. If you don't have any luck I'll have more. I can't package in my usual way because the pipe insulation that is supposed to be 1 1/4 inch is really tight. Never used to be that way! I looked at the 1 1/2 inch today at Home Depot and it is over $4.00 per length. I hope you at least get a couple of girls out of the deal. Remember some of the eggs were older than I usually ship. Kathy didn't get any developing from the five Icelandics I sent to her either.

Keep us posted!

Sounds good enough to eat Kelly! Egg laying must have picked up at your house if you are sharing with the chickens! BTW, we have no dial tone on our phone today! I think they screwed up again and disconnected this one like they did last time. I have move a lot in my life and have never had trouble getting a phone switched over like this! After disconnecting the line at the old house without asking us they then decided that we would have to pay a reconnect fee! Michael handled that one! Needless to say we are not paying a fee. Anyway I will call you on my cell tomorrow if the dial tone isn't back. Can you believe that AT&T has no staffing on the weekends anymore even for service outages? Unreal.

All the animals are here with us! We brought the layers and the Icelandics over tonight. The coops and runs are tight now and nobody should be able to visit the neighboring run. The baby chicks in my basement moved into their coop today and boy did they have a blast! They even went outside and palyed. They have their Eco-Glow at night but I will turn it off during the day. The oldest one is five weeks old and the others are four weeks old. They have lived their entire lives in the garage or basement until today. It was so fun to see them spread their wings. I checked on them once and I had three playing on the top roost and five on the lower roosts! Too cute.

I'll try to get pics of Lukka and her babies tomorrow. She showed them how to eat and drink today so they may very well venture out side tomorrow.

Emu/Goat shelter should be starting tomorrow. I hope so. Rain is predicted for Wednesday.

Here are some pics from today.

I built this little cubby for Lukka and the babies. It was a silly little roost that came with the coop and I just enclosed it. They seem quite content.
