I never heard of puppy strangles and thank goodness my dogs never did. In the olden days they used to get everything or pretend they did, so I was always making emergency runs to the vet. The vet(interchangeable) would always say "I've never seen that before." and proceed to charge me a fortune.
I think vets need better glasses. They never saw "cherry eye," or staph skin infections, etc. etc. so I obviously had to pay more for giving them the experience. The major reason I haven't had a dog since 1989. I can't afford them unless " Bo"Obama comes up with a health care act for low income dogs.
Well, I..was the one that pointed it out to our local horse/cow vet here in town. The first vet, and myself said that it looked to be Blepharitis, so he was treated for that. Then, as I see he is not getting any better, but in fact worse by day 2 of treatment, I get back on the computer. Soo easy to see what it was when I woke up this morning and found that lump under his chin and around his neck..gets big enough to choke them if not treated..hence, the word strangles. Well, this was not the vet that saw him first. He looks at the notes the other vet that is now on vacation wrote. He looks at the pup, says, well, sometimes these things just need to run their course. I said..no! This is strangles, and it will not run a course..(well, it will, but will kill if not treated) I'm not sure what he thought about me but I didn't care. I was not leaving without some steroids. I told him, the only thing that is going to cure this is steroids, that if we get him on it early, there will be less scaring. He has a whole ring around both eyes now, with a secondary infections, which I also pointed out..the thickening of his eyes aren't just from the strangles, but from the infection also. Golden's are known to get this at a very early age..like I said, 3 weeks to 4 months of age, the immune system just doesn't want to work right for some reason. Given a needed boost during this time of strangles is good, and it is not one of those things that will come back..well, can do, but hardly ever.
Kathy, mlm, I am actually doing better today..I can smell. lol...thank you for asking. I haven't had a cold for over a yr. so guess I was due. No fun, hoping DH doesn't get it. He hasn't yet, so thinking he squeaked by on this one.
