Stella's Social Club

DH wanted cookies, so today I'm making chocolate chip, oatmeal, coconut cookies. He doesn't like anything with lemon.

We call those cowboy boy cookies.

I confess to using Krusteaz fat-free cornbread mix - it is so easy, just add water, and really quite nice for a mix. A little on the sweet side maybe, but nice with butter and honey.

I have been using deep-litter for several years. Last year the bitter cold came so suddenly I did not get the coop cleaned out before it froze up. Since it had no smell and seemed in good shape I left it for the summer, only scooping out the wettest material when it thawed in the spring. Today I cleaned out the almost 2 year old bedding. It was fluffy, dark brown, slightly moist and crumbly, with almost no odor, and should be perfect in the garden in the spring. I retained about an inch to seed the new bedding, similar to using sourdough culture I hope. Then new bedding, a dose of dewormer all around, and in 10 days a light - and done for the big chores until next year

I know I almost left it too late, as the bedding was starting to freeze up a little. But I wanted to wait to clean out until I dewormed, and waited to deworm until the birds were taking their fall break. Everyone is growing in beautiful new feathers, and looks fat and sassy.

Mary, I think even your old pictures are lovely.

Yep, that's what they are called. Some cowboy cookie recipes have raisins. Raisins go well with oatmeal, but I don't like them with chocolate. The youngest DS won't eat raisins either. I guess I have a household of picky eaters.

I love them with chocolate chips!

My DW insists on the raisins and no chocolate chips. I often make them half with raising and half with chocolate chips.

I am making turtles and English toffee tomorrow.

Burp..... good beans... and the ham hocks fell apart... I never had them do that before. I am getting better at my timing.

Marie Calendars cornbread was pretty nasty. I used the Microwave instructions....

Thanks.... Whew. I feel better. This is not my house and I have HUGE gaps in my Culinary training.... Mom used to burn the same pot of beans two or three times.... Burned pork chops were the norm. in our house.... So I learned how to cook off of TV. Ghraham Kerr I can still bone a rabbit.... or a chicken thought i havent done it in a very long time. But simple stuff like the chemestry of baking completely escapes me...

Roast it, Crock pot it, Fry it, Boil it... I have it covered.... but baking... erm I need lots of space because I get flour on everything... I dont even know where Grandma keeps her mixer....

Bread... Oh Heck no.... not in my lifetime.... Maybe if I had a bread machine.... pour all the ingredients in and let it go... i could do that.

Though I might like to try my hand at Soda bread. But not in this house.

While your recovering, take some online cooking classes. It is never too late to learn.
