OMG!!! Poor Harper! Was she in the yard or roaming farther afield? You'll have to be very careful of your children out there!! Just what you need with all this uncertainty about your DH's job..

Thanks everyone. Most mornings I take her out with me to care for the animals, put her in the chicken yard with Merlin, and do chores. About once a week she goes for a run and comes back about the time I finish chores. Not intentional, she just runs off before I get around to putting her with Merlin. She was out on a run. Didn't come back right away, but about a half hour late, about 10 AM. She dashed straight in the house and went under the table. Not totally normal but not completely out of normal. At noon we went to leave for church and I called her to take her out to potty- and BOOM her face looked like a chipmunk! At first I thought she got into a wasp nest or something so we gave her benadryl and went to church. Got home from church, no different, gave more benadryl. About 7-8 PM still no better, I gave another dose of benadryl and started hitting the web. THAT'S when I figured out it was a copperhead bite. By then we were WAY too late for antivenom (needs to be given within 4 hours, ideally within the hour). We have had SO much rain we don't let the kids even go down to the pond- and forget the creek. Lonny sees snakes EVERY time he mows in the pasture so we are keeping them up near the house. The good thing is copperheads although venomous are one of the less dangerous venoms. And a head bite to a dog is uncomfortable but very rarely fatal.

DW has finally traded in her 2003 Chrysler Concorde for a new car. This is the first new car she has ever gotten (she has always bought used cars).

A friends of ours dog got bit by a rattlesnake in his manhood. He survived.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments on the DW's new car. I'm just happy I don't have to worry about her car breaking down when she takes her trips.

@ronott1 , Her trip to Spain is scheduled, she leaves Sept. 15th, if you want her to bring any hatching eggs back, I need to start working on her now. When I first brought it up she laughed. However, we nearly had her on a plane to Iceland to bring back a couple of puppies before we came to our senses, so it might be possible.

Wow, y'all are hardcore! :bow

Thanks, no word from the Wednesday interview. Friday interview went very well we hope to hear from them this week. He has another interview in an hour. Got the severance pay Friday so we are jumping off the deep end now. Our adventure this weekend- Harper got bit by a copperhead snake yesterday morning. I didn't figure out what got her until late last night so we were too late for antivenom. A vet visit and an antibiotic later she's going to be OK. Will probably get a draining sore at the bite area, it was a bad deep bite with lots of venom and there is a lot of bruising that will probably slough off. We have to wean the pups immediately. They are just over 5 weeks old. We will give them goats milk with their puppy food, they will be OK.
Where do you live? That's really scary, how did you make the connection tat it was a copperhead?

I have 3 very load roosters. Is there a forest or safe area I can leave them where they can find food and water and sleep on tree branches? Or even a sanctuary that will give them life long care?

There are very few places where you can drop off chickens and have them live more that a couple of weeks. They are domesticated and do not go wild well.

There is a park in Fair Oaks California that works because people feed them. They are still likely eaten by predators.

The best thing to do is to find a feed store that will take them. There are some chicken sanctuaries in the SF Bay area. I do not know if they are nation wide. I process the extra cockerels but do know that not many are prepared for that.

Wow!

I will contact @Hangtown Farms and see if Jason is ready for getting some hatching eggs sent over.
