we are dealing with daily frozen waterers for the goats , chickens and our Livestock guardian dog
today the ice was over a inch and a half thick. tonight i will empty the chicken waters at least and refill tomorrow early. i poured hot water on the goat and dog tubs. they are a black plastic so it doesn't crack them.

Sounds like a NY winter daily experience - but, so far, knock on wood, hasn't happened here yet! Christmas day was 70 degrees! Today it's 50. I'll take this all winter long! One of the ways I try to deal with the frozen water is by switching to large heated dog water bowls. We have to string extension cords from the one barn that does have electricity to the other 2 coops but it sure is worth it. Last winter, our worst in years, the water never froze. The one draw back, even raised up, the chickens kick dirt in them and they need cleaning out regularly. But so much better than pounding, kicking, smashing those black rubber tubs while your hands go numb!

Merry Day after Christmas! We survived Christmas day with family and had a great time. Granddaughters stayed over last night but I returned them to their mother this morning. Found out last night that Michael's brother and his three big dogs are coming for a visit today and tomorrow. He will be staying in his motorhome in the driveway. I think I'll leave the tree up another day so we will still have the holiday look going on. Normally I get up at the crack of dawn on the 26th and get it all taken down and put away. This old dog will have to learn a neck trick.

Our dinner was really good yesterday. The beef tenderloin was perfect (cooked in an electric roaster), the ham was great, the tamales too. The rolls would have been perfect had they not gotten too brown in my Easy-Burn-Oven. I need to figure out what the heck is going on with this thing! All the pies were burned on the top and the bottom crusts were still raw. It is so frustrating because I am not a burner! I just posted a scathing review on the Frigidaire website but it won't be posted until it is "moderated." So much for unbiased reviews.

Too bad Mary, I know how perfect you like your food.

I use a heated waterer in my small coop, but fill it with sand and put a plastic waterer on top. In truly (subzero) cold I also put an insulating sleeve over the top of the waterer. All placed on a cement paver to raise it so that it stays cleaner. This was two years ago, now I use plastic -
