I have unknowingly trained my German Shepherd dog. My chickens were free ranging. She was barking, and I went to the door to see what she was barking at and heard my welsummer rooster sounding the alarm call. All the hens were in hiding and he was out pacing and shrieking. I went out to hear a hawk calling. Didn't see anything nearby and the hawk call was going off into the distance. So, I came back inside. Not 5 minutes later, she's barking again - again I go to the door and hear my rooster and his alarm call. Got some scratch this time and put them back in their run. She was so happy to go out on patrol.
I literally did nothing to train her on this behavior. The only thing I have done is take her out with me when I would hear something wrong. (she once chased off a bobcat for me) I gave her some great pets for being such a good girl. Smart girl!

I got so sick of deer eating everything (they even were cruising my deck for potted plants), when I fling open the door and say "Deer", everyone runs out the door barking.
that is funny

When I go to the nursery and mention deer, they start discussing deer resistant. I tell them no, I want something they will eat, choke to death and dieQuote:That's funny. What a great dog..................it's always good when they can help.

The deer have been eating my lilac, which is supposed to be deer resistant.
I treated myself today to an apricot tree. I've been wanting one, but haven't been wanting to dig a hole until it rained. I went to the nursery today and to my surprise, there were some Blenheim Apricot trees still bare root. So it's now in a pot until tomorrow when I can dig a hole. My orchard is fenced to keep the deer out, but I'll have to put up some temporary fencing to keep the chickens from eating all the growth since they are in my orchard.
