Dar, sorry about your chick. Maybe they were too old for the broody? Too bad. You did the right thing for the others. I am a nervous wreck about the rest of my hatch. I still have five dark eggs in the incubator but so far, only one pip. Egads. I should just buy chicks.

Finally finished my incubator/brooder house today. The right side of the playhouse is where the incubator will live. I even squeezed enough room in the tiny space to put in a cabinet and a couple of shelves. The total space I am dealing with in the playhouse is 4x8! 




I built a brooder on the left side. It is 4 feet wide by approximately 3 feet deep so they'll have almost 12 square feet of living area. There is a window that opens on both sides of the house.






I built the brooder up off the floor so that the floor is at window height. They'll be able to see out and get good light during the day. Plus, I won't have to bend over to clean it out, change waterers, etc. I have the big Ecoglow brooder in there as well as my sweeter heater. It is hanging just behind that board so you can't see it. I think I will keep it turned on during the night since we have been getting very cold at night. As you can see the little yellow house isn't insulated. I also have a safety lamp with a red party bulb in it. Everything is clamped, double clamped and bungeed for safety. I drilled a hole for all the power cords to go out so they can't get wet or messed with until the babies get bigger. The big frame at the top is over hardware cloth and that swings open for access. Down at the floor level I put in sliding plexiglas doors for quick water changes, feeding, etc. 

The first occupants moved in tonight.




Hopefully I will get Michael's help to finish the netting so we can clean things up and make everything look better.

I'll probably be going out there all night to check on them. Lucky for me it is right outside the back door!

Here is how I spent 3 hours this afternoon.  Did I mention I HATE getting up on ladders and roof's?  I was on both today, moving the netting around and "instructing" my 12 and 9 year old on where to zip tie it to the fence.  After getting the bottom secured, I was able to get off the ladder and work on the top.  Lots of cutting zip ties and stretching, but I think it looks pretty good now.  It was a royal pain, but worth it if it better protects my flock.  I'll get some hog ties that Mary recommended and finish it off.

Looks great. Yikes! I can't believe you got on that roof... Very scary..I'm empressed!

Kelly, the picture you took of the Barnevelder hen is really good. With its dark color, subtle color, and delicate lace you would be hard pressed to take a better picture, in person she'll always look better!

Marans...??? I had a couple rooster free range with my Maran girls..
