I hope Kola and Blue Boy have some girls, it has to even out eventually, right?
Are Kola and Blue Boy Roosters?

Hens determine Gender in chickens. They are not like us. There are too many Cockerels, change out the Hens.

Here is a picture of Forsaela (a daughter of Kola that Kathy shipped me last spring with my GNHs, so we know she can throw pullets) and her chicks. Four of them are from her own eggs.....

Kelly, What do you think on Forsaela's blue chick?

I have a question for all you experienced breeders. I have a LOT of interest in my Iowa Blues right now, but many people want chicks. I guess it's time to take the next step and learn to ship them. Is there a good source to learn how to get started?
Ummmmm, Mary's blog maybe?

Shipping out a few orders today. I had to get online to get addresses!
I hatched 5 Kola babies - 2 black, 1 blue, and 2 chipmunk. I do hope there is a female or two in there. ALL of the others I have hatched from Kola and Blue Boy have been males. 100% males!

Wishing you all well.

Holy cow that's a lot of babies! Mostly Delawares I take it?

A little young, but so far, looks like a pullet.

Has anyone ever had chicks that would just not stop cheeping? My olive eggers have cheeped incessantly since they hatched a couple of days ago. The brooder temp is spot on, though I have tried raising it and lowering it. They have plenty of room to get out from under the light. They have food and are eating. They have water and are drinking. They don't have poopy butts or any other sign of a problem. They just peep frantically all the time. They are in the basement and can be heard through two floors to the bedrooms upstairs. I really want to keep these chicks but may have to put them up on Craigslist just for the peace and quiet. I am as close to losing my mind as I have ever been. I cannot think of anything else to do at this point. Ideas?

Mary, one thing I've always noticed. If you look at the area of the shoulders, just between the wings........boys will start getting feathers there first, pullets will still be chick down. You'll just see some little feathers sticking out. I've got a zillion chicks in the house right now, let me take a picture.

Maybe try bunching up a towel or a washcloth (don't know how many there are), so they can snuggle up to/under it?

Okay, here are two chicks, same breed and exact same age.
Boy

Girl

Here's a male chick that is a day older, so the shoulder feathers are more developed.

This has worked for me on about every breed I've ever raised (except silkies, no normal feathers). The first two chicks are frizzled polish, the third is an araucana.

Make some guesses, tag the chicks and see how close you are. Mind you, this is all just my own observations. I first noticed this when I first got chickens in the '70's.

It's noticeable at about a week of age.

I'm bummed. Last year was the year of the cockerel, so this year is supposed to be the year of the pullet. I hatched 11 wellies earlier this year and 8 are boys. Then I hatched a bunch of barnevelders and I got a bunch of boys. I NEED PULLETS! Guess I'll have a lot of boys to pick one keeper on the barnies.

And Mary, today is my man rant day and you are not answering your phone.

And to top it all off, I have a couple of hens experiencing reproductive "issues". I've been getting A LOT of fart eggs lately and I've had 2 soft shelled eggs this week.

Been in the basement and at Target. Sorry. If you man rant to me you are getting it right back at 'ya. Just saying. I am grilling burgers for dinner but can talk after that.
