Stupid question.

Speaking of wants, my kids have been bugging the heck out of me for a cat. Now they've got Dad on board, so I'm the meanie. If (and that's a BIG if) we get a cat, there would be no litter box - so it would need to be an indoor/outdoor cat. I am the one that gets stuck cleaning the litter box, and my last cat made a huge mess with the litter all over the floor. I've only had an indoor cat in my life, so I have no idea if they take to this willingly? Anyone have any issues with cats and their chickens?

Get a kitten, and introduce it to a broody with chicks. End of problem. The cat don't see no chicks !

My broody took her two babies out for the first time today.








I guess she taught them how to go under the fence. The hens next door pecked it and it scooted right back under.

No problem whatsoever. Sometimes Lizbeth will "stalk" chicks outside, but it's just play, and easily short-circuited by either my calling her name or a grown up chicken approaching. She will walk right through a bunch of chickens to follow me, but avoids the geese and ducks.

She has been interested in chicks in the brooder, but it's mostly to see what is making the noise. Once she sees they are chicks, she loses interest.

But then again, Lizbeth is a remarkable cat.

I've had other cats during the past few years; Licorice and Smudge would watch chickens with interest, but after each one got pecked on the nose by an equally inquisitive chicken, neither ever showed any desire to mess with the flock or even individual birds.

My smallest bantam hen, Alice Silver Sebright, tends to draw Lizbeth's attention, but Alice is very feisty. She jumped AT Lizbeth, causing a sudden "I think I'll go sit somewhere else" response.

Chickens no, he doesn't even bother the little Olandsk Dwarfs.But I wouldn't trust him near chicks. He's a complete outdoor cat, one that just showed up one day.

I have had a cat who knocked over a brooder. My fault, brooder was on a counter. And another cat who would eat chicks. They were both adults when I got into chickens.

Regarding the word want, my ex-husband had a particularly crude saying. If I ever said I wanted something, he would tell me to "sh!t in one hand and want in the other and see which one fills up first." Can you imagine me divorcing such a prince? Go figure.

I couldn't do an indoor cat. All they do is produce a box full of treats for the dogs....................

And my dogs kiss me every chance they get! I would be careful with chicks. I had two cats that got shut out from some brooding quail chicks. They were accidentally shut on the WRONG side of the door. I came home to 30 missing quail chicks and massive quantities of cat diarrhea. Apparently quail chicks are quite rich.

Henceforth quail chicks are called....................kitty treats.
