Has anyone here noticed chicks you grow out inside tend to be bigger then ones under broodies? It is getting noticible in my silkies. Not so much in the Marans. I give everyone 20% feed but the outside chicks run around a LOT... Do they catch up later or just always stay smaller?
I have noticed that too. I guess because the chicks I raise have nothing to do but eat high protein food and sleep. The broody chicks get variety (weed seeds, etc) and run around, a lot!

Yeah. Last year a set of silkies got put 1/2 under a broodies and 1/2 inside. The inside ones were twice as big. But they ended up as mostly roos and the outside chicks got wiped out before they were full grown so I don't know if they would have caught up.

I figure there are people here with experience who would know!

So far it is not as pronounced in the breese.

Diva, here is the pic of the kid which was disbudded yesterday. It was a lot harder to get a decent picture than I thought. In person they just look very sad, but seem to recover quickly. This poor thing had to go alone, as she had some congestion in her lungs last week when we took her brother. We're kind of wimpy and take them to the vets to have it done.

I had a Nubian show goat herd for years. I always disbudded my kids at 12-24 hours old. Much less traumatic on them, as the horn buds and the scent glands thicken quickly.I also docked my Suffolk Sheep at 12 hours old before their tails had fattened. Again, much less trauma.

I have a broody white empordanesa

There ya go bragging, Jason, about your fancy-schmancy Empordanesa birds. ;)

I'll have you know I have eight - count them: 8 - broody hens right now, plus three hens with chicks. Of the broodies, one is a Faverolle, one is a Cochin, two are Orps of different colors, two are bantam EEs, and two more are gen-you-ine mutts. Every chick hatched by 'em will be a mutt, too. The Olmstead Homestead is a freakin' mutt chicken factory.

Plus two broody ducks and one with ducklings hatched two days ago. They, however, are all Cayugas.

Seriously, though, congrats on the broody!
