My broody English Orp gets no chicks. She had one hatch yesterday and failed to protect it. I found it under the roost, dead. Sheesh, I thought Orps were supposed to be good broodies? Now I gotta try to break her. She can stay and lay eggs, but she'll never brood any babies ever again. Too many failures on her part.

Oh Kelly I am so sorry! I have a wire bottom crate if you want to borrow it to break her. She seems a little thick in the head for the broody business.

Nice hatch Mahonri!

Jason, look for a DogLoo.  You can find them very cheap on CL, sometimes free on FreeCycle.

You could also check places that sell jet skis, snowmobiles or riding mowers, I got a really nice riding mower crate 2 years ago that makes a great temporary coop, you just need something to cover it with.

ENOUGH!

Fate. You believe in fate?

We were packing to leave for Iowa, as we were notified that Mike's mom had a heart attack and was transferred from our small town hospital to Omaha. Trisha (Mike's sister) then called again and said to wait. Not to leave yet, because Omaha hospital said it is not a heart attack.

So, we halt plans. Shortly thereafter, the phone rang. A stranger. She said, "I am calling to let you know that your daughter is okay. She was in an accident, and she needs you." Panic. She was on a country road (between our house and Walmart) heading to our house. She was driving too fast, turned around to check the baby (in carseat in back seat) who had a bottle, and lost control. The car went into a ditch, through a fence, rolled several times, and was totaled. Not much left to it, out in the middle of a field, I was told. By the looks of the car, they say, it is amazing anyone lived that was in it. I will get a picture when I see it.

Brittney always wears her seat belt. This time, however, she did not have it on. This really surprised me. She is lucky to be alive. She can not remember alot, except that she was, "getting into the back seat." (to get to the baby)..... She does not know details of that - getting in from where? From outside? From the front seat? Unknown. She said she just knew she had to get to her baby, and was praying and praying, "Save my baby; take my life. Save my baby; take my life, not his." She got him and took him out of his seat (one of the straps was pulled totally out of the carseat and dangling), and started running.... running towards the road, to get help.

Kayson, 2 yr old, was here at our house, and not in the accident. I stayed here with him. Mike went to the scene of the accident and picked up B and baby. He took them to the hospital. B had no broken bones, but had scratches and blood all over. (glass, I suppose). She had stitches put in the top of her left hand and knuckles. She is very sore, and I expect that to be worse in the coming few days. Her neck is very sore. Whiplashes are painful. Baby Cylis seems to be fine. He did have a small red area on his forehead. No bump, just red area. He gobbled down 6 ounces of formula a couple hours later, so it did not affect his appetite. Smiling and laughing. Sweet baby.

Unknown where her purse and cell phone are. No one has even looked for them. Not even important.

Brock is still in the hospital. Unknown what is going on there.

Mother-in-law hospitalized, condition critical, frail.

Brittney and baby - home and happy to be in pain, rather than dead.

Sending you m prayers... How awful !

Quote: Deb, Do the males and females look the same at hatch? What about as adults? Are the cocks henfeathered?
I didn't notice any difference in the chicks, but these are my first. They are shaped/body type like any other leghorn, just the beautiful markings make the difference. As chicks the color was large patches of black/white like your chick, no spots.

Swiped internet photos.

Hens

I'm hoping to get my youngsters moved today, if I do I'll take a few photos of them.
