My DH was looking at the tally from the elevator for feed......

......I told him the meat birds are all is the freezer now and the cockerels from eggs I hatched this spring will be going to the auction this week.......I didn't tell him that still leaves "quite-a-few" that will need to go in order to get down to what is more manageable for my chicken sitter buddy. It is so hard to decide on who to keep.......

Tell me about it! I need to get rid of some (many) breeds. I'd like to have less than one breed per coop/pen and have the 15 spare pens without a proper house, just keep them for grow outs. It would be amazing if they were empty now and then so we didn't have to play chicken checkers when we need to move someone from the 9 brooders. And it would be amazing experience empty brooders for a couple of months.

THAT is my goal!

Less birds to care for this winter when rain is running down the back of your neck and you are slipping in the mud (at least I like to tell myself it's mud).
I hope the down sizing goes well!

I have two less Cockerels today!

19 week old White Bresse.

As promised........Forsaela and her ten chicks ( 6 lighter, 4 darker)
Hard to get a good picture of one Icelandic.....let alone 11 of them! One of the darks is behind the "masked" one...

They were loving the meal worms....here are two having a "Tug o Worm"!

I'm counting on it, I seriously need to curb the $2,000 a month feed bill (mind you this includes hay for the sheep/alpaca and dog food).

I started my serious downsizing after I admitted to myself that I was spending over $1,000. a month just for feed. It is ridiculous (to me) to waste that much money on my hobby. I still use a bag of feed a day, and plan to cut that in half by the end of the summer. We are retired now and living on a limited income. Gotta start watching the budget.

Love it! All of my Icelandics are dark. Well, I do have Mr. Paint, but have not hatched any of his chicks yet. I have all blacks and blues. I will try to get pictures tomorrow. One pullet is near point of lay.

We have a predator. A day time attacker. Mike caught a glimpse, as Tyson (dog) was chasing it away. It is likely a coyote, he thinks. We found a couple piles of feathers, though no dead chickens. I did not look them all over today, so am not sure if some are missing.

Look what I got today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He said the hen is a green winged scarlett. He said not one word about wanting anything back, only that she would lay at least two more eggs this week.

It's about the size of a large bantam egg.

Yup Kathy, we go through at least 12 bags per week...................and we're retired. I was so tired when DH was gone for a week and I had to do it all, I felt like crying at night. And now here I am gone to State Fair for five days and DH is home alone with it all.
